3rd gear went today...
#1
I was out having fun on a frozen lake...and was in 3rd gear, and floored it, v sideways - and all of a sudden it stopped pulling and the tranny made a horrible rattling noise.
Seems as if it "finally" happened - the thing I've been expecting for ages.
Thing is - this tranny has put up with LOADS of hammering on track, dragracing and general looning about without a problem.
And today with massive wheelspin in 3rd it shagged itself.
Anyhoo - deffo time to sort it properly, and the question is dog or synchro?
I don't mind the noise (I actually love it) if one can get a helical 5th for transportation use - and the double clutching bit on downshifts won't be a problem.
The car in question (MY00, heavily modded) won't be a daily driver anymore.
The dog gearset from PAR through Lateral Perf. is quite a bit more expensive than the synchro version - I'm trying to decide if the extra cost is worth it?
I *really* did NOT like having the tranny go fubar on me, and would like to rebuild it to be as strong as possible for a manual tranny (and still fit my budget).
Ferkin difficult decision really.
What do U guys think?

Been in that position so know how you feel /J...
I asked around for a lot of advice, and understood that a non-synchro box was not for me.
I settled for Mark's PAR synchro set in the end, but mine is still used as a road car.
Would advice you to try & drive a dog / non synchro set before you'd buy one.
There's a good thread on 22B from about 3 months ago that explains all the differences very well.
As for why it broke now: my last box went when I was poodling around in traffic at 40 km/h ... I guess the damage was done before.
Don't drive the car now as swarf could still be going round, ruining other bits that you might want to keep (like 5th gear).
Good luck.

LOL
True mate, true.
I've decided on a PAR synchro mate, and I'm going to look into gearing...and perhaps sorting a type R centre diff....and a new rear one.

I think it's an excellent choice, great VFM.
The gearing... I opted for the "normal" setup (close to stock), but in hindsight might have chosen shorter ratios ... oh well. Take your time to think them through, and maybe also consider (since the box is open anyway) to have an ATB front diff fitted(if you still have the open diff now that is).

Already sorted that mate.. A month ago I had the tranny split and a Modena ATB style front diff fitted, and I was really having a hard time trying to decide to go for the gearset as well.
Guess if my mechanic laughed his **** off last night. The ******...
It's interesting really, a synchro set will (maybe) leave some room for a new rear diff....or should one opt for one of them lovely 35/65 centres?
