Notchy 2nd gear, what could it be?

Had my 93 wrx for 2.5 years now and it's always had a notchy change from 1st to 2nd when cold. Just thought I needed to change the oil to syntrax so I had that done at last service but it hasn't made any difference. Is this normal or is it something more sinister like a syncro problem? It only does it when cold and only ever from 1st to second, not down again?
Thought I might see if we have any scoob gearbox experts out there

I know the later models have notchy 1st gear when cold (my MY99 has always done this since new) and 3rd gear is known to become notchy when the synchros have gone.
So, sorry I don't know.

I have a 96 uk prodrive which has exactly the same problem. It only occurs when the engine is cold and only 1st to 2nd change. I have covered about 20,000 miles since and it is still exactly the same ie it hasnt got any worse. At first I was a bit worried about it so I asked the Subaru dealer to look at it under warranty. They said that it was normal as the gearbox was a 'racing one' (bull). I have also had the box oil changed but no difference. I just take it easy 1st to 2nd until the notchiness goes away, its ok then.

Yeah, im dying to try another scoob to compare with my own. Mostly to see how the Gearbox feel but also I want to hear another one starting when cold so I can lay to rest the idea that all scoob engines sound tappety.

I found my 98 got worse from 1 to 2nd when I fitted a quick shift. Only a player when cold and when I swapped back to a normal shift it got much better.
It sounds a common occurrence.
