So I bottle of this stuff raises the fuel 14+ points?

Please provide a link to this wonderful stuff...

PS. remember that it takes 10 Octane points to raise fuel 1 octane.

So anything that raises by just '2 octane points' (at 40litres) will just turn 97 oct into 97.2 oct, it does not raise it to 99 oct... that would be 20 octane points...

JB did you keep the car advanced that far for any length of time... IE 500 miles?

JB are you a member of the GTR forum as your answer and what maybe about to unfold from it would be best added to the thread there?

Thumbs up

SCC performance in St Albans can supply NF Octane booster. 13 quid for a litre. Add about 1/4 per tank load....

Cool

a full bottle will add a whole 6 RON!!

use about 1/3 per tank and you'll add about 2 RON.
Makes it not too expensive for everyday running... chuck the whole bottle in for track days

Or Rolling Road days when using optimax I put in 1/4 of a bottle.... Should get it up to 100RON even if it has "settled" a bit.

I'd say very little as you will need to do more than just add the additive with a none turbo'd car.

You can run some more advance etc, but this is all extra to take advantage of the fuel.

Millers Octane Booster with Optimax is what I use to get up to 100RON.

The millers is available from www.scoobyparts.com for £33.62 for a case of 10 bottles. 1 bottle per tank on a Impreza will take you up to 100RON if you use optimax.

Why use it? To make sure you do not suffer from detting!!!! (detonation = very expensive engine rebuild or replacement)

Shouldn't worry about the plugs, not sure I'd risk octane boosters in anything with exhaust aftertreatment though. Not sure what these boosters normally contain, but increasing fuel RON by a couple of numbers doesn't sound unreasonable. J

Remember a substance called TEL? Used to be quite a popular octane booster. To reitterate, boosting octane is a doddle if you don't care about catalyst longevity. J

Tertiary Ethyl Lead (from mem.) was indeed a good 'Octane booster' in its own way... not a good idea with Jap motors. (with cat or not)

And TEL is very very very very toxic... it is a serious A grade poison and will attack the brain through transpiration so keep right away.

Mycroft I was quite cynical about the real benefits of booster following on from previous threads and info given.

However, I found I gained about 20 wheel horse power in several stages by adding up to a full bottle of NF to a full 60 litre tank of Optimax. I could add 6 degrees of advance from peak torque to peak power in doing so. All along I was working up to the point where it started to det and pulling back a degree. Perhaps I could have added more than 6 degrees with the final dose of a whole bottle, but I wanted some safety margin for the rollers and airfield day the next day.

How does this fit with your experience and obvious petrochemicals knowledge? Does it sound credible or not?

I have no interest in NF by the way!

Tetra, but not bad from memory. Well aware it's poisonous and banned from road fuel in many countries, but not all metals are, MMT is one such example.

BTW TEL is pretty engine-friendly, just a shame it ruins cats and causes brain damage.

200 miles of hard use, since I have changed the turbo.

Hard use - I mean some very hard back road testing, and an airfield day.

I could hear det audibly (even without the separate knock sensor connected to the laptop or knocklink) if I ran anything like this sort of advance without the NF. With it there was none. In addition the EGTs were fine and it made more power the more I pushed it.

With these factors in mind I don't expect my engine will grenade because of unrecognised detonation - wondered if this is what you were thinking?

I am getting a stronger engine built anyway (not that there is anything wrong with the present one, but 1.7 bar on cast pistons and standard Subaru internals is not entirely sensible anyway).

However, don't want to run with lots of booster as my safety margin on track if there is some reason why I might be doing damage... could you elaborate on any of your reservations?

Feel free to copy/paste this into the GTR thread with your honest impressions Mycroft. Can you also give me a link to the GTR thread?

I've no axe to grind, not bothered about being right or wrong just want to go the right way with it. Slightly worried if you thought it was about to blow up because of what I've done, as I said though another engine on the way, but pointless to blow up a good motor avoidably.

Thanks.

I had read (prob on GTR) that NF changed the 'tone' of the knock to fool the knock sensor.
I would have thought that if JB had been detting then the power would have started dropping off ? Rather than continue rising ? no ?
Also I would not expect cast scooby pistons to survive det at 1.7 bar for much more than a few minutes ??
I know my own pistons had a total of approx 60 seconds det over a one year period and that was enough to break a ring land.

At peak power mine is not active on the knock sensor anyway, so it relies on ears and separate knock sensor and a fixed map, this has allowed me fairly obscene power out of a standard engine for longer than I expected so far....

Have read the OB/Optimax threads on GTR. Any comments Mycroft? Is she gonna blow?

Question

Orangey deposits on engine internals.....anyone care to comment on where that is from, why it occurs and what it may or may not affect?

Li'l miss W, if you read the last page of the OB thread you find out exactly what those 'rusty' deposits are.

Many of these 'octane boosters' do change the manner of how the det occurs det. has a frequency (around 6400hz) now the detectors are tuned to this frequency, there will be harmonics of that frequency (fifths/thirds/sevenths, even Octave doubling) and that is what your ECU is expecting... move that frequency up just a bit and you will see that the chosen frequency amplitude is diminished.

Again you need to read the OB thread.

I've read the thread. My ears have a 20Hz to 20kHz range since I am still young Detonation is quite obviously heard on my car even if you just a few degrees too exciting. And why does power increase? This is not active knock control at my peak power point as I said...
