Next gearbox??
#1
I have just smashed my gearbox up and need another. I could just have mine repaired only to let go again so I'd prefer a stronger more reliable box, what options do I have??

Since this post, I have had a new engine (STi4) and now I need another gearbox. Was out yesterday driving normally overtook a car just about to change from thrid to fourth and WHOOSH, clutch pedal dropped went into fourth carried on up the hill, changed back to third and nothing. Stripped third gear, problem I have is this was an STi4 gearbox, I don't want to go through this again, options????

I got a used(1700miles) 6speed with all the parts to bolt it in to the GC8 My99 for 1800£......
Cheaper than a stonger gearkit, and no labour to fit a new gearkit in the old casing..

It is 450 BHP and 400 lbft. Suggest discuss with Mark re builders.
It seems the STi 5/6 boxes have been holding up well with AlanG's, Harvey's and Bob's cars all putting out good torque through them. But people say they are not stronger. Puzzled. Is there really no difference?

You can choose from different ratios as you please, there's a slight risk that you'd need to change final gears to get exactly what you want (UK final is 3.9:1, the manic shorter gearing is 4.444:1 IIRC).
Contact Mark@lateralperformance.co.uk for more info.

Been reading the archives and found this thread.
Just to let you know I had the Lateral kit (PAR/CHALAK).
Doing very well with it but only putting approx 350bhp through it.
After you give it some welly and change down and back up it seems reluctant to engage, it feels like it is going to fall apart if you decide to force it.
Third gear is especially wierd, 50% of the time from 2nd to 3rd it feels like I am changing gear into a pan of mushy peas.
Still happy with it until it fails.. which may happen.

I have just been down this road myself, after breaking my forth box i looked at the lateral kit and the possum bourne kit,i finally went for a strait cut syncromesh MRT gear set. They can make the kit to match your MY and needs,it came with an unbreakable garentee because they are 60% stronger than OE sets.I just put the box in yesterday and it feels great, the only down side is the noise, but it retains the standard fith. The kit is much cheaper than the lateral kit depending on the exchange rate but i paid £1900 including postage.the web site is Mrtrally.au

Alan, would be a good idea to drop the gear oil and inspect the magnet carefully. Some have experienced pitting of the gear tooth surfaces which has been manifest by difficult changes. It could of course be a dodgy synchro. If you have a problem it is only likely to get worse and possibly break catastrophically if you ignore the signs.
