I was wondering how much power i would gain if i make my TD04 hybride. Or is the VF23 the better choice ?
I prefer the TD04 'cause of it's quick spooling up.
I'm not searching for more than 300-310 BHP.
Currently i'm running on a standard td04 with EcuTek which gives me about 270BHP and 350NM. Any advice would be nice
i was thinking to make the td04 hybrid
put in a 255 liter walbro fuelpump
Different (colder) sparkplugs
samco hoses.
Remap from EcuTek

I would think that a front entry TD05 would suit your needs perfectly
Less lag than a VF23 turbo and also up to 380 bhp capability should you want to go there in future !

Explore all your options before you go ahead with any turbo. At the end of the day it must suit YOUR requirements and no one elses.
Once you have a short list, ask relevant questions to those turbos, with regards to YOUR needs.

It is just the donor TD05 turbo that may be a bit scarce, depends if you can wait a week or two, or not ?
Converting it to front entry will allow it to make up to 380 BHP. It can be hybrid with a TD06 to produce up to 450 bhp but I don't think that's where you want to go !!

Steven & Andy,
your both right!
I'm very pleased with the driveabiltiy as it is now
That's why i was thinking of making the td04 Hybrid.
To get 300 bhp according to Mark (EMS) is to get a VF23
at least that is the setup he sell's. But i've been testing with some of the 300bhp setups and they all have turbolag. Sure they make it up at higher revs, but in the beginning the td04 with tek3 takes 1 or 2 car lengths. So the next logical conclusion would be that a hybrid td04 can keep that little advantage longer as a normal td04.Which makes the difference nihil between both setup's, beside's that, the driveability is much higher because of the quicker spool up!?
Maybe i'm thinking in the wrong direction, butt it makes sense doesn't it ?

You're right David, It takes a lot more top end to make up for what you lose down at the bottom end, that's why I do not recommend a VF23. I've driven 2 of them on Link ECU's and they were gutless below 3500 rpm.
A correctly set up TD05 will match a TD04 for bottom end pull, anything over 3500 and the TD05 is striding ahead.
I suggest you look through some rolling road results and see which turbo's are producing the best midrange torque figures, you will find a common theme

...but (sorry Andy!)...if maintaining spool around 2k5 is your most important goal, a td05 is not for you.
However, almost certainly in another year you'll want more, and a td05 will likely save you costs in the long run.
The problem with hybriding the 04, I would have thought, is the restrictive (at high revs) exhaust side. Even with a bigger inlet wheel, this would still be the limitation, no? Depends, but I'd expect a compressor wheel mod of the 04 to net more torque through mid-range than outright top end power?

...but i'm looking for only +30bhp more and maybe a +30nm.
The td04 is now at his maximum. As posted earlier, i'm not looking voor maximum power but for driveability. If i wanted 350bhp or more i would go voor a hybrid tdo5, Fmic, walbro fuelpump, 550cc injectors with boost @ 1.6 bar and 1.3bar@7000 rpm
But that's a clutch and gearbox killer. Not my kind of thing.

Suggest contacting John Banks. He has used both a TD04 hybrid and a front entry TD05 on his car and has LOADS of data regarding spool up and off/on boost performance of both units.
He has also previously tried a MD304 VF hybrid from Mark.

do you have an email adres of John Banks?
@mike555:
Your right, but i can't drive normal in my scooby
it's already so difficult to wait until the car is on 90 degrees celcius before flooring it

Andy, I cant work out why they made any other turbos'. The TD05 seems to fit EVERY users requirements.
Guess that I shall have to fit one to my RX-7 and see how slow it is.

Andy F..
I am currently running a TD05, where abouts are the TD06 covers sourced from??
Also you have mentioned matching these up with a 20g compressor, could you enlighten me on this please mate.
Is it simply a case of taking off the covers, replacing the Compressor wheel/shaft and bolting on the new TD06 cover, then getting it balanced???
Have been lurking behind the threads on this for a while and would love some info..
Mail me if you dont want to post it.
Thanks
Rob

Correct Stephen It's interesting to overlay JB's TD05 power curve with Stephens TD04. Hopefully John can post some details ??
Danny - Your learning
Rob - I have a few kits which are all spoken for at the moment. They were sourced via iON Performance in Canada as they are not available in the UK.
I can probably get some more but they are getting in short supply as this conversion is very popular on 400+ bhp Mitsubishi's in the US.
If you can dig out the DIY 400 bhp turbo thread, most of the info is in there. (I should have it in 'favourites' I'll go bttt it )

Andy, a turbo that makes circa. 500BHP on a scoob, would only make about 250-270BHP on a rotary. So lets just say that a TD05 IS too small. Will be speaking to to right person when the time comes to supply something like a hybrid GT35/40 or bigger.

"Didnt Stephen Done get circa 300bhp and 300ftlb torgue on a TD04 hybrid whilst using the TEK remapping?"
Does anyone have a print of his power and torque
and even more important, what is the setup of his car

From the description I gather that the lower of the two traces posted is Stephen Done's car. The power figures on the graph are 'at the wheels' so 240 is probably around 300 flywheel power.
Danny - fit 2 then

Having looked at Stephen's setup a few weeks ago, he's got a full T75 exhaust(with cat), maxim racing equal length manifold, induction kit(K&N ?), replacement i/c pipework, relocated airbox intake (I think), plus the remap.

Probably more by now.

Andy, I have done the way of uprated engines, and got bored with it. So am now putting the scoob back to standard ish form.
I have bought an RX-7 for a weekend/track plaything.

Strange that the RX7's are not so popular over here as track cars ? They are very popular in Auz and the US. As usual the UK will wake up to them a few years later
I bought my scoob with the intention of keeping it standard as a 'nice' road car
I have a bike engined kit car for track use/abuse.......but then it rained one day so I used the scoob It was a downward spiral from there !

John, as we ALL know, some rolling roads give better figures than others.
When will all this bull**** stop? What some people like others dont.
I have used an uprated VF turbo on my car, and was VERY happy with the results. I bought a TD05 to be modified and put on, but things took a different course, and I sold it.
Because a certain model of turbo didnt produce results people are to quick to slate products. Perhaps they should invesst a little time and try work with suppliers and get things working properly.
I know that I did.

There are several gearboxes snapped above the magical 300bhp line.
I do not have the money for a new or stronger one. 300bhp is the maximum i'm willing to get out off my scooby. If i wanted more, i should have bought een lancer evo . Now i'm very pleased with the way the car drives with the Tek3. Only i just want a little more power in fourth and fifth gear. That's why i was thinking of making the td04 hybrid, quick spool up time and than it's able to keep more boost in the higher revs i think ?!
And is a VF24 an other option ?
What would a front entry td05 cost?
and that doesn't have a quick spoolup time does it?
