the thermostat is not controled by electronics e.t.c..

You can remove it and put it in some boiling (near to boiling)water and see if it opens.. If its fubard then it wont open as it will be already open if you get what i mean...

Hi all,

Car wouldn't warm up this morning, in about 10 miles of open road driving the temp gauge only just crept over the first mark on the temp gauge, it normally runs half way on the gauge.
Same happened tonight also the car ran lumpy for the first mile (almost like carb icing feeling) and it also seemed to use a lot of petrol.
After about 7 miles of open road driving the gauge was hardly registering. After this I was stuck in traffic and the temp gauge went to half way (it normally reaches half way after 2 miles of open road), the car ran normally when the temp was normal but just wont get there normally.

Any ideas?, it's almost like the thermostat is stuck open?

Same thing happened to me turned out to be a faulty thermostat, sounds like yours is stuck in the open position permanentley thus not alowing the engine coolant to warm up and then the thermostat should open , i think a new thernostat was about £12 . You can check the thermostat by using a multi-meter .

My car is the same, having a new thermostat fitted on Friday along with some other work being done. I do a 20 mile journey to work and the needle only gets about a quarter of the way up the gauge, unless I'm in traffic when it gets to the middle, but then drops off in seconds once speeds increase. Seems the faster I go the cooler it runs !! Do a search if you are going to do the job yourself, looks pretty easy and there are a few threads with details. Would have done it myself only getting the time to do the job is the problem for me.
