Hi guys,
I noticed today that my MY98 UK Turbo has started to develop a quite loud whistle that get's higher in pitch as I accelerate, like a Harrier Jump Jet taking off! However it only seems to start making the noise as the car comes on boost around 3k. The car is relatively low mileage (43k) for it's age and has been regularly dealer serviced. I'm worried could this be my turbo on the way out or is it just transmission noise?
Your help is appreciated
Karlos

karlos, stick your head near the turbo with the engine idling and listen for any exhaust blowing/leaking.
a knackered gasket at the rear of the turbo (where the downpipe bolts to) can cause the sound you mention....very loud squeal.
worth a try

p.s. worth noting it may not always be heard blowing either when listening under the bonnet. mine sounded fine, no blowing sound, but on changing the gasket, the squeal disappeared.
its the gasket fluctuating that causes the squeal btw.

Thanks for the replies chaps,
Incidently my dump valve, although the standard one, is very audible on this car as opposed to other Impreza's I've owned. When accelerating it almost sounds like an induction kit and dumps like a VTA valve so could it be that which is shagged?
I'll get the gasket checked next time she goes in for a service though
Thanks again,
Karlos

swassie,
your turbo will always have made that noise, its just that you couldnt hear it before with a catted downpipe. no worries there as long as you have the boost controlled.
