Driving home on Saturday, I noticed a clattering from the engine, having spoken to a few different people today, it would seem as though the car may have a big end bearing gone.
Firstly can anyone recommend a good specialist in Herts that could confirm the problem, secondly assuming that the big end bearing has failed, is it worth looking at a rebuild, or sourcing a second hand engine to replace it.
I spoke to API in Warwickshire today, who quoted me approx £2500 to rebuild the motor, has anyone got any experience of these people, any help would be much appreciated.

Hello mate, where abouts in the engine is the noise coming from? Also, if the bigends have gone then there will be lots of gold bits in the oil....
There are so many things it could be. The problem is that the best way to describe most engine noises is "a knocking/clattering sound" which could be anything.
edited to say SCC Performance in St Albans will do the job.....

My big end bearing went on my car. Sounded a bit like a tractor when squirting the accelerator just a touch when in neutral at standstill. Lots of clanky noises
I got a second hand engine for 1K. Ancillaries came off old engine block and then were put back on new engine block.
Rebuilds will generally be more expensive.
P.s. - make sure you find the reason why the big end went. Its important to get this problem sorted or you'l just loose your second engine.
Best of luck
