Question

A common route to upgrade the performance seems to be to change the turbo. For example, my car's a UK MY00. Conversations on SNet relating to such cars always seem to mention a certain turbo-selling firm, often in conjunction with the reference to a front-entry TD05.

OK - so there's a tried'n'tested upgrade path. What's different about that turbo over a stock UK MY00 turbocharger? Does an upgraded turbo necessarily increase lag? How much does any lag depend on the mapping?

Cheers,
Ben

depends on the turbo, the standard TD05's were quite laggy, which is why there are so many TD05 hybrids around.

The MY00 standard turbo is a TD04L, this is quite a weeny turbo so will spin up pretty quick but also runs out of puff at the top end. The TD05 is a larger turbo so produces good power all the way up the rev range but will take that little bit longer to get going. I went for the VF route, got the biggest one they do (the VF22) with a nice little Turbo Dynmamics sticker on the top telling me it is a Hybrid. Smiles all round past 3200prm

Start by saying "how much power do I want?" and go from there.

Don't forget that cost is also an issue the TD05 converted to front entry is excellent vfm over a hybrid turbo, and some would say the power gains are similiar. Thats why I have gone for the TD05 on my modded MY00 UK.

What modifications, other than a remap, do you need when buying/fitting a new turbo? I already have boost gauge, samcos, de-cat, BRAKES!

Also what figures are you seeing with the new set up? How does it compare to drive?
