Gearbox Oil Level
#1
Hi Peeps,
Im a little concerned about my gearbox oil level, ive done 4400 miles in my MY03 and my gearbox oil is on 'min' (L) when i checked it at about 3000miles it was about a quarter up from 'min' to 'max'.
Questions are,
1) do these cars 'use' gearbox oil?
2) Does running on 'min' cause any issues?
Thanks for any replies
Simon
PS i do seem to have a noisy front diff too.

Should not use any oil at all, unless you have a leak. It can be difficult to read the level correctly, because the oil is so clear.
It should be just below the top hole when cold, and below the top notch on the dip stick when hot.
I have found the best way is to remove dip stick, wipe off with cloth, insert fully leave for a few seconds and then remove, if you find it hard to read look around the back of the dip stick where there are no markings, you should be able to see the top of the line where the oil film finshes.
Hope this helps

Thanks Eprom,
Its definately 'just' above the bottom hole (L) at best.
What do you think my best options are:
1) Tell the dealer and let them make a mess of the repair or deny that anything is wrong.
2) Let it run out of oil and seize, then getting a new gearbox under warranty.
Do you think customers are responsable for gearbox oil level? (most cars dont have any means to check it)
Thanks again

You will be responsable for checking the fluids, thats why they supply a dip stick, get it back to the dealer to get it checked out, the box holds about 4.5l but not sure how much you need to add to bring it up to the full mark.
I have filled my box with Castrol Syntrax after reading threads on here and it totally transforms the box, a bit of an **** to fill though, because you have to fill it through the dip stick hole.
If you are not happy with your dealer just change to another, you are not compelled to stick with the dealer you purchased the car from, if more of us did this, we would weed out the useless dealers by default.
