Crunching when selecting 1st gear
#1
Car has recently started to crunch/grid when selecting 1st gear. this doesn't happen all the time, if i release the clutch and reselect the gear the problem seems to stop?

Mine has now done this twice in three days. First time scared the living daylights out of me.
Came to a stop at the lights and tried to select 1st and crunch.
Foot nearly fell of the clutch i got such a fright. Do i need to change the gear oil or is it more serious the car has done 73k.
cheers.

the teeth on the clutch might just be worn a wee bit. happens to every car and is nothing to worry about. i think anyway. sounds like it's the same thing as when your trying to select reverse and it won't go in. deselecting the clutch helps it move round a little bit to centre itself when being engaged. might be wrong mind you.

DRB can you explain the "teeth on the clutch" bit?
Usual reason is that the clutch is not completly disengaging (clutch drag) or a possible 1st gear synchro. problem. At a standstill select 2nd (stopping the gears spinning) then push straight back into 1st - not too fast - if it still crunches it indicates that the gearshaft has begun to spin again pointing to clutch drag.

some cars just can't take going into 1st gear without being totally stationary and the scoob is one of em.
as for the teeth, hard to explain, but when the clutch is engaged it selects the gears through a set of seration's(teth) therefore turning the designated gear cog. i think that's what i ment anyway.
