I have used the chevron oil in a wrx and it was ok. It is the same as any other 5/40 synthetic as far as meeting standards goes. My brother used it for a long time in a primera gt and had no problems. However, you may want to use a thicker oil such as 15/50 if you drive the car hard. Do a search, there are loads of threads about oils. The chevron stuff is probably ok for ordinary driving, as is any equivalent 5/40.

My 98MY turbo ran on BP visco 5000 5W40 fully synthetic oil for 110,000 miles bofore I bought it (previous owners local dealer service oil). It runs fine and does not use any oil but since i have owned the car (one year and now at 118,000 miles) I have used 10w50 Morris fully synthetic oil based on recommendations that 5W40 is too thin.
Not too convinced that for normal driving 5W40 is not adequate but will run using the recommendations on this forum which are 10W50 or thicker (ie 10W50, 15W50, 10W60) with Mobil 1 motorsport, Castrol RS and Motul often being mentioned.
Make your own mind up...

I changed from Mobil 1 15/40 to Millers Fully synth 5/40 last month as the local motor factor near work was selling 5litres for £19. First thing I noticed was my loud tappett noise that I've had since using Mobil1 (four changes so far) suddenly dissappeared. I don't tend to give the car too much abuse and it is pretty much standard so I don't see any harm in using it again. The car seems to be better from cold as well on this oil.

I've been using Comma 5/40 fully syn...changing the oil every 5000 and it's been excellent. No oil is used, only a very small part gets into the induction pipe - blow by which I understand is common on subaru's due to the induction pipe sucking the oil mist out of the crank - and no engine noise, tappets etc.
Car is running 370 bhp according to Scoobysport and it flies. Got an oil pressure gauge and its reading the same with this oil as with the previous oil from the dealers (not sure what that was though)...It's done 23,800 miles now...

x scooby, I was also told by a dealer they use 15/40 semi, but looking up on the products of the manufacturer the said they use the only 15/40 listed was a conventional (mineral) oil?
