I have priced up the following Back boxes and centre sections for MY02 Bug Eye and come up with these prices DELIVERED.

Can someone help me decide, i dont want a teeth rattler but also dont want a purring ***** cat. Something deep and throaty would be nice

Haywood & Scott £419.50

TSL Firestorm £512.38

Scoobysport (is this a H&S anyway) £540.50

Afterburner £425.00

Like i said these are delivered prices and inclusive of VAT.

Cheers in advance

I have a H&S (03WRX) and am disapointed with the quality. The pipe which connects to the centre section is T409 not T304 which it should be at the price and is formed from two sections and narrows in diameter (not manderl bent) and the fit was not very good. The internal pipe goes down to 2inch.

If you want the best quality exhaust I have ever seen then go to http://www.zorstec.net/main2.htm

Andy will do you a Backbox made totally from T304 and mandrel formed pipes for £220 fitted with any tail pipe you want and £80 for the Center section. He can also do CarbonFible and Titanium.
My H&S will be comming off soon for a Zorstec one. I have had several exhausts off Andy for varions cars and they are of unbeleavable quality, works of ART !

Firestorm is a Teeth Rattler... Beware Quality is superb though!

TSL Group N or Scoobysport will give the kind of purposeful growl you are after..

James.

Stiler

erm, could you explain the difference between T409 and T304?

I have this backbox ( Ex Scoobysport 2 years ago - same one ??) and it all looks like stainless steel to me? What are the benefits and problems of these diffeent T numbers?

Thats the only problem i think. Unless you've specifically heard them on your car you're not going to know.

Think the old scoobysport system is 4inch slash cut (made by H&S). From looking at the new ss one (made by Janspeed) i think its smaller.

Interesting to hear the comments about the H&S one. I've got one of theirs on my new WRX MY03 and cannot fault it, I had a really good look at their premises (they're nice and local) and manufacturing procedure and thought it was 1st rate, plus they were almost the cheapest. YThe system gave me just the noise i was looking for....nice and deep and growly but not MaxPower earsplittingly daft.
Oh yeah if u ask Ian at H&S nicely he'll do anytype of tailpipe u like (round,oval,slash,outwardly/inwardly rolled lip, titanium, etc).

T409 has lower Chromium content that T304. This means it will tarnish over time and is cheaper and lower quality than T304. T409 was designed for use by OEM's as all OEM's exhaust have to by law have a 5year guarantee.
The most important thing about the H&S system is that does not uses Mandrel bent pipes which causes restrictions and lowers pipe strength.
T304 SS is the best for Exhaust systems.

Vulnax

info from machinery's handbook
T409 (s40900) General purpose construction stainless .Automotive exhaust systems.

and T304 (type 304) for applications requiring higher strength, generally these are low carbon for better weldabilty, there are several types of 304 i.e. 304l,304Cu,304N .

hope this helps.

Scoobysport systems are made for us by Janspeed and are 100% T304. Silencer feed pipes are CNC mandrel bent (as are all other sections) from one piece of tube and the internal diameter of the perforated tube is also 2.5".

To set the record staight ,firstly would stiler83 please not comment on something that obviously he doesn,t know what he talking about,we have been using BS304 for the last 20+ years in the making of our exhaust and HAVE NEVER HAD A COMPRESSION BENDER and HAVE ALWAYS USED A MANDRELL BENDER so the area through out a bend is always constance and the same goes for the internals of the box which is also BS304 2.5" unlike some companies , that use BS 409 inside were it can't be seen.

Well the one I got was not mandrel bent well if it is then it's like none I have ever seen. The pipe that connects to the centre pipe is not T304. Let me ask Scoobyexhausts this if you put a magnet on your exhaust would it stick anywhere at all yes/no? Well it does not stick anywhere on mine except the pipe connecting to the centre pipe therefore this is not T304 correct?
Also are you saying that the pipe connecting to the centre pipe should be one piece? The one on mine is two pieces welded together.
Now I did buy this exhaust second hand but it is a H&S as I have seen loads of them and it is clearly one theirs. It is possible that the connecting pipe has been chopped/changed but it does not look like it. If I can find the time this week or weekend I will take a photo of the exhaust.

If Scoobyexhausts can explain any of this it would be most helpful and if I have made a mistake or said anything which is incorrect then they have my sincere apologises but I am only saying what I think is correct.

If you put a magnet on to any part of our exhaust internally or externally it will NOT stick to it!!!, as for your centre pipe we would like to see a picture of it, as from your description with the compression bends it doesn't sound like one of ours.

Stiler

TSL's pipework is compression bent and their boxes have a striking resemblence to the Scoobysport ones. I'm not sure what materials they use, but it sounds like the previous owner has passed it off as something that it is not.

Ok I've uploaded some pics. These are the best I can do without getting the car onto a ramp.

http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL206/1303431/2477378/30037413.jpg
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL206/1303431/2477378/30037048.jpg
http://pic7.picturetrail.com/VOL206/1303431/2477378/30037441.jpg

The only thing I do not like about this box is the previously mentioned pipe which connects to the centre section pipe. I also had to chop 5mm out of this pipe to get a fit I was happy with.
If this pipe is Mandrel bent then it is like none I have ever seen and why is two pieces welded together and not one piece ?
The box itself is very good and sounds great.
