Unhappy

Took my 98 Legacy GTB in for a service today - knocking noise at 3500rpm - garage (Simpsons, SW London) have advised no alternative but to remove engine and investigate, hopefully top end, possibly oil pump issue. Explains the sluggish performance.

Not mechanically minded so would appreciate some advice:

Is this a common problem at 110,000 miles?
20 hours labour estimate at £50ph - is this reasonable?
Anyone have any experience of Simpsons?

Thanks

Mark

I don't know how they work in the UK but it seems like most of the garages are money-thieves. Here in BElgium, I have a very good relationship with my dealer. If there is a big work to be done (gearbox, engine, 60k miles service...) We discuss in advance the estimated time and labour. He calculates it in a way that we are both satisfied, I have to live, and so does he...

But it's completely stupid to ask 50`£ if you know in advance it will take 20 or more hours to strip and rebuild an engine.

Most of the garages think that way, but luckily the good ones have another way of doing business...
