Expensive 5th Gear solution
#1
Anyone else had the "jumping out of 5th" problem.
MY99 with 26k on the clock. Car would "fall" out of 5th on over run, but only with a passenger ! How weird is that ?
Ended up jaming in neutral ( 200miles from home )
Total cost from Subaru main dealer £770 EEEEEk!
Beware

It's a classic fault, and should be covered by warranties.
The nut holding the main shaft together is working itself loose, and lets the 5th gear "package" move on the axle.
It's just a matter of tightening that nut up - which actually can be done with the tranny still in the car.
You need to remove the propshaft, and the centre diff housing.
1 new gasket, and 4 litres of gearbox oil plus labour.

not long done mine on my 94wrx,used to jump out of gear and crunch, eventualy i couldnt get 5th,i was also told that it might be the nut on the end of the mainshaft(common),but it wasnt that. the 5th gear selector had broken in 2 places one on the fork(that selects 5th gear itself and a piece that holds the 5th gear hub.also 5th gear syncro.it wasnt very easy though took about 6 hours.the bits were cheap got them from gradeasubaru(very helpfull).all i will say is unless you have a bit of mecanical know how dont do it youself.....goodluck

SAM - do you have the torque setting for the nut anywhere handy? Might put this on my weekend job list if I can be sure of getting it right...
