Swapping is simple. Undo the two bolts retaining the I/C, the jublilee clip on the turbo outlet pipe, the big jubilee clips on the throttle body to I/C pipe, and the dump valve return pipe spring clip. Pull the DV return and manifold pipes off their spigots.
Remove the I/C by pivoting it up at the back, making sure it doesn't catch on the bulkhead or brake lines. The turbo and throttle body pipes should disengage by themselves.
If you're using the same dump valve, unbolt it and transfer it to the new I/C, then refit as above in reverse. Make sure you use the STi Y-pipe instead of the standard plastic one.
If you didn't get the metal Y-pipe with the I/C, it's worth getting hold of the Samco version.
Do's: Take the time to straighten the fins on the new I/C with a toothpick, fine pliers or similar.
Don'ts: Don't drop any tools on the I/C fins, especially after all that hard work straightening them.

Sorry to hijack the post but can anyone answer this for me?
I've got the sti intercooler with the two inlets, and was wondering what you meant by the metal samco y-pipe?
The intercooler I've got doesn't have the elbows. Does the samco one fit directly to the intercooler?
