Just bought a wrx and there's smoke coming from the right hand side of engine, do the rocker gaskets leak & are they easy to change? As I drive it over 4K it starts to cut out and the 'check engine light' has lit up!! What parts of the engine does the warning light cover, plugs, coils, fuel? Search me Guv. any advice to a novice would be appreciated.

Yes the scoobys are prone to leaking from the rocker cover gaskets, mainly the turbo side due to the heat, quite easy to change as long as you have nimble fingers. Done mine in 2 hours. You need to check which code is coming up in your ECU and post on here what the code is. Do a search for "CEL codes" on here and it will tell you what they are. You can also do a search for "Resetting the ECU" that will tell you where to find the wires you need to connect.

When you replace the cam cover gasket, dont forget to apply some silicon sealer around both joining faces too, otherwise it will leak again, even with new gasket on.
so far as engine cutting out, are you suffering from over boost? Is it actually cutting out or simply misfiring due to an HT fault?
