I have a standard 2001 wrx and am thinking of fitting a k&n induction kit. Will i notice any difference. thanks

you will notice that it becomes quite a bit louder in the car, turbo & DV noise , prob better fitted with decat exhaust, better breathing & less backpressure go hand in hand

I don't think I would do this as the first mod. It makes alot more noise (which can become annoying) and would probably not give a real (as opposed to perceived) performance improvement. I feel that as much of the exhaust should be replaced as possible first, as this will give a 'nice' noise and would probably give more performance improvement.
First thing to do with mods though is work out where you want to finish, and work backwards. This means you won't waste unnecessary money!
Lot of good reports on ITG filters in the airbox though!
