I've got a 94 WRX Sti 5Door(80KKM) and the clutch just stopped working on Sunday. Doing 50 in traffic , pedal goes up and not back, can no longer change gear, no warning whatsoever.
Garage says its TOTALLY in pieces and I'm now looking at £500 plus labour(nearly a grand).
Guy at garage says it happens all the time on Turbos(news to me). It was supposed to be a new clutch when I bought it 5 months ago(8K Miles), not sure now. I don't drive it too hard and its mostly motorway miles and never a standing start. I'm OK on the clutch going but the guy says that 20K is about their limit, can anyone confirm if this is rubbish or is it spot on. I don't fancy £1000 every 6 months for a new clutch.

My brother and an other friend both drive 4cam turbo legacys.

They both had clutches go on them with a month both at around 55000 miles.

New clutches where about £200.00 but where a bugger to fit even with lifts in our workshops with gearboxs having to come out.

My brother has since done 25000 miles of hard driving with no problems. Told by a clutch distributor the earlier turbo subarus all seem to have failing clutches around 50000 miles.

I have heard of early turbos going over 100k miles without needing a clutch. My guess is that perhaps the new one was fitted incorrectly, or has suffered a mechanical failure of some sort before it's ended up in bits. I wonder if the previous owner got a warranty when he got it fitted ?

I can't see how replacement of the clutch would use £500 in labour. I think it's a 5 hour job max if you know what you are doing and have the correct tools (according to a Subaru dealer). Not unless you garage charges £100 per hour!!

Just had a new clutch fitted to my STi4,9k !!!.
PE did the work, and charged £168 + vat',for fitting.

Plugs (58)
Oil & Filter
Air Filter

Seems high to me given some of the other input. I've also been told that there are 3 or 4 exhaust leaks that need fixed due to leaking gaskets. I'm getting the feeling that I'm being ripped off. Someone make me feel better.

PS Anyone got a list of engine diagnostic codes for a 94 Sti as the Warning light show up intermittently and they say the codes don't match up to the list they have.

The £1000 was a rough estimate but will as usual turn out to be right or too low, never any less in my experience.
I'm also getting the plugs,filters & oil and timing belt changed whilst he's dropped the engine so that adds to it all a bit.
I'll let you know the total tommorrow as it gets delivered back tonight.

There's no need to drop the engine to change the clutch.Only the gearbox,and drive shafts.

Both GGR, and PE quote 4hrs for the job.

Yea it can be done in about 4 hours. Its not a hard job. Sounds like ur thrust-bearing retention ring has dropped. Clutch goes to the floor and stays there??? Thats the bitch with puller clutches, once that ring slips the bearing its game-over...
