Question

Age old question I know, but I am hesitant to fit the SS back box as, from what I've read on the previous threads, it is fairly loud. The alternative is the Prodrive box, but I don't know the cost or build quality. All I'm really after is to get rid of the twin tail pipes for a stainless model, without causing the wife or kids to go deaf!

Any thoughts or advice please.

Cheers
Neil

Prodrive backbox is only available as part of £2000 performance pack. I have it, it is worth it, but if you only want the back box, its an expensive option!! - unless you can persuade someone to sell you theirs 2nd hand! Noise wise, not much in it between SS and Prodrive. Prodrive is a bit quieter, but not a great deal!

I fitted an ss backbox last month and to me its sound great. However to my wife who drives the car daily in heavy traffic it sound loud, or so she complains!
I tell her to turn the stereo up or let me have the car and she can drive my van! That seems to do the trick.

Fitted a ScoobySport yesterday (only took 1/2 hour) Wow these things should be fitted as standard. Haven't stopped smiling since I fitted it

Neil,
just do it mate.....its the best single modification you can do that produces the biggest grin, infact why not go the whole hog and get the full scoobysport system. My girlfriend drives the scoob to work and shes not even noticed the extra noise, and trust me she would be the 1st to complain....

Thumbs up

The scoobysport backbox on its own isnt actually that loud. Aurally, its a magnificent improvement and mechanically aids breathing especially when coupled with an induction kit or standard air filter upgrade. Its only when you fix it to a downpipe and decat centre section that you actually turn the relatively sedate Scooby into a FIRE BREATHING MONSTER WITH TEETH AS SHARP AS YOUR IN-LAWS TONGUE!

Its funny really, at first you say "ooh no, dont need the backbox changed, dont want too much noise, people would think I am a boy-racer".
Then you bite the bullet and do it and you say "ooh, i couldnt do a downpipe, its too noisy"
Then you do it. The same applies to the centre pipe.

Some advice to those that either have an upgraded exhaust system or plan on doing so in the near future. Time to time, get take a reality check and get someone else to drive your car while you stand outside. You never notice how nice/loud your car REALLY sounds from the inside as its quite deceptive. Step out the car and do your ears a favour.

Ian

It is a Decat, does not add a great deal of performance so I'm told, but believe me it sounds the Terriers Testis.

I have a full SS system; manifold, decat pipe and backbox, it has transformed my car into a firebreathing musical instrument.

Question

emmmm!
so how much does this middle bit cost to have replaced ?? ive a STI V5 if it makes any difference.

Is it a lot of work or a simple replacement like the back box??

Only i spent so much time down SS i think the Mrs thinks its run by a busty maiden.

Apart from the backbox, how much of this lovely stuff will pass the MOT or random emissions tests ? I don't like to be a killjoy (I have a Magnex back box and like to drive with the windows open ) but anyone thinking about changing the downpipe or centre section should be aware of the risks.

Sorry if I caused any offence Pete. My dealer told me they carry them in stock. So I went to get one fitted. No stock so they said they would order one. I'm still waitng!
My car is due for a service so will give them some more hassle. If no luck I will give you a call.

Ian,
There are a couple of ways of going around changing the centrepipe. If you go to Scoobysport, they just hack off (litteraly) the centre cat off the centre pipe. Now getting rid of a cat is ALWAYS gonna add BHP and u will notice a difference in torque. This also adds immense aural stimulation

The other way is to add a purpose built decat centre section. The Magnex is a popular choice and comes with an in built resonator which helps keep the noise down.

I went the the hack and slash version from petes, which costs just £40 instead of the 1£100-£120 it costs for a magnex replacement. As far as I'm concerned, I have one of the nicest sounding cars I have ever heard.

MOT.
Grey area and I wish people would be warned about this before spending on exhaust decatting. It took me 1 month to get my car MOT'd, at which point I also had no tax. Noone would touch it as it DOES NOT PASS. You mustnt forget that the Impreza needs 2 cats to pass in the first place. There are ways of going around this, mail me off line if you need any info, but they all involve a lot of hassle.
