Hhmmm - how do I broach this subject to a BBS full of petrol heads?!
I've a MY99, live in conservative Switzerland & leave for work at 5:30am every morning. I originally chose a Scoobysport BB 'cos of all the high-praise and "not too noisey" remarks.
I loved it - however, wife & neighbours (@ 5:30am!) aren't so sure.......
It was acceptable at first, but after 6 weeks its gotten "throatier". While this is a nice sound, I can't really live with the neighbours scooping their children off the road as I drive (slowly!) up the steep hill to my house..........
There was no real performance gain from the BB (except perhaps a little, little more in the mid-high range), so the original (horrible!) backbox is back on & I hope (are you there Craig?!) I've got an STi item on the way.
I know this will not give any aural enhancement, but will at least get rid of the silly twin pea-shooter thingy!
So (finally), to the question - I'm interested in performance gains and don't mind a little increase in noise (the car now sounds like a bloody Rolls Royce - albeit it a rather swift one!). Has anyone tried fitting a de-cat down-pipe with an standard back-box & did they still get increased throttle response?
Has anyone played with the manifold in front of the turbo - what were the results?
Any recommendations/thoughts gratefully received!
Thanks
Richard
PS: oh yeah, I've an ITG filter at the mo' as well. Maybe interested in the K&N if it's ever released for the MY99........

Richard,
I have a MRT hi-flow cat downpipe, MRT centre section with muffler and a Remus backbox.
This is very quiet - less noise than the standard exhaust.
The breathing is far better - maybe an option worth considering ?
Thanks
Gavin

Hi Richard!
I'm also from Switzerland looking for a good exhaust.
So far it seems the best exhaust comes from MRT (complete system!) from Australia.
....I think if we ordered together, there would be less shipping cost......
send me an email!

do you speak german???

Further to Ric's comments, I would make a couple of suggestions:
1. Speak to Scoobymania in the UK regarding price (they may be able to get it cheaper than MRT due to shipping costs -

Thanks for comments - Ric, I've mailed you.
What I'd really like to know is whether anyone's tried a cat-less downpipe with either the standard or STi (same thing but one pipe, I think?) backbox? And were benefits still realised?
Mind you, the MRT system sounds interesting. Is the MRT noise reducer thingy a new centre-box section? How loud is the entire system? Anyone out there got it?
Thanks
Richard

Know somebody who went that way, ie downpipe but original exhaust. Said he wouldnt change the exhaust for a drainpipe since he didnt want to loose any low end. It was faster than my STi which at the time has just had an Apexi gt exhaust, no d/p. And was really quiet.

I have an SS downpipe running thru the factory system on a '97 sti type ra, noise is not an issue, barely louder than standard. I've not got any dyno figures but throttle response is very much improved and it seems to hold the power better from 7 to 8 k. Makes flames and pops out of the back on full throttle 8 k gear changes !

Thanks All
Guess I'm going to try a catless downpipe mated to the standard (STi) backbox plus centre section - maybe then I'll get to see flames at 8k too...from the front wheelarches as the pistons escape!
Two obvious choices seem to be Scoobysport or MRT (do MRT make a catless one?). Anyone know prices or alternatives worth looking at?
Thanks Again
