Doesn't blueprinted actually mean that they use components with the closest tolerances - rather than have them 'expertly made'.

On which basis I do believe that STI engines are blueprinted. Also in Japan there are a whole series of component options that can be added to the list.

Pistons? Crank may be the same as UK cars. Supplier I spoke to was very cagey when I asked the differences between a UK andSTI crank.
Think it is matched components, a few forged bits, nice bit of red and silver paint and that's it. Maybe.
When they're in bits though, they all look the same

What is the difference (other than power!)?

Or what do STi do to make it more powerful...

The STI engine is blueprinted, which I think means everything is precision made.

well thats what they told me about my STI V5.Im sure theres alot more as well.Might weigh less maybe.Bigger turbo??

Need an expert I think.

Oh dear, were to start?

I cant be bothered. But suffice to say that the sti engine aint strong enough, hence some BBS members uprate things like the Crank, conrods, turbo, fuel rails, pistons, etc,etc

Blue printing as I understand it, is indevidually machining components to their exact design specs/tolerances, to produce an engine that is as "perfect" as possible with the componentry used. Ray Stringer is it who does it for bikes. Could be good for 15/20bhp maybe. Wheres the rest come from??

had my celica engine blueprinted.
everything was balanced so that there is no difference in piston weights etc

should have seen what they did to my crank!!
looked like it should have been scraped, all chunks and bits taken out of it

it just shows how imprecise manufacturer engine components are

Rannoch,

Surely the process of "blueprinting" the engine requires more expertise than assembly with larger tolerances, hence a blueprinted engine could be correctly termed as being more "expertly built"?

Steve,

Suffice to say that the STI engine "isn't strong enough" for a few individuals who post to this board's purposes/taste. The Standard STI internals appear to be ok up to at least 310/320bhp on road cars running reasonable levels of boost... obviously, if you want to run silly levels of boost, e.g. in the region close to 2bar, then uprated internals and a sympathetic bank manager are a good idea.

I aint gonna run silly levels of boost - max boosting at 1.7 bar on track days, with more sensible levels like yours for tootling around!
Still at 1.4 bar it should give me a significant hike in power. With the mods I'm after the gearbox will need playing with but, well I could be dead the next day - so might as well burn my money!
I'll give you a spin when its complete or perhaps Anders will be complete sooner?

I dont need a sympathetic bank person as I'm only gonna spend about £10k - pocket money for us well off people

As I said - it would'nt be long before I got the wedge out!

After speaking to a few people on the subject I decided to go with Warren.

This will involve all the basic internal upgrades, steel Billet crank, uprated conrods, pistons, head gasket, cam revisions, equal length manifold headers, fuel surge pump, etc, etc.

I am also looking at the intercooler, water injection and gearbox changes.

I guess to be safe I'll need to be looking at the fuel rails? - anything else radical you've done to your car?

I dont know what the mods will produce but as long as its a bit faster than it is now I'll be happy. (I'll have to get it bench dyno'd - just so I know what its producing, rather than some spurious rolling road figure)

I also need to look at sourcing a decent clutch - AP probably and AP brakes - but to fit under the 16 inch alloys.

I'll mail you offline

Steve

Buy an EVO instead. It will end in tears plus the way it will be driven will mean it will last about as long as England's Euro 2000 effort.

Who's Warren? Not that muppet doing Anders' car I hope.

I'm new to Scoobies as of this year and was amazed to learn the Jap equivalent Imprezza kicks out 280bhp!

Bigger turbo, new induction system, pistons, ecu, etc...

Is it a LOT of pain and heartache get my MY00 UK car to produce 280bhp, and whats the easiest route ?

Easiest route is buy an STI. You can do it to UK cars, but say bye bye to your warranty.
