Can anyone recommend a replacement exhaust that isn't going to sound like a Vulcan on a vertical climb? Is it really a straight choice between extra horses for extra decibels, or can you get the performance without the noise?

Yes - replace it with another standard one!!
I'm selling one if you want it - booked in to Scoobysport this Saturday to have full system from turbo back - and as i'm a saddo I want it LOOOOUUUUDDDDDDD!!
Even sadder - we are fitting two systems - got so much grief from the wife that her P**geot 206 GTI was poop - true - that we bought her an Impreza turbo too so there were no arguments - and she wants a noisy exhaust too!!

Denz,
Thanks - the site certainly is comprehensive. Unfortunately nobody seems to quantify the noise output, probably because they assume that for most people louder is better. Not so me, and i know i'm in a minority. On a Renault 5 GT Turbo i had, i used a Devil exhaust, and it was almost quieter than the standard system, which to me was heaven. Conversely, a Magnex i fitted to a Golf GTI was the worst move i ever made - it became seriously tiring on any journey of reasonable length. I just don't understand how/why people put up with a droning exhaust all the time, but hey, what do i know??!

HKS exhausts are nice as they use aluminised steel pipework instead of stainless steel which means you don't get the cabin boom and reverberation drone associated with SSteel systems. I use the Super Drager which is quite loud but then I fitted it with the downpipe from new. It's not boomy at all though. The hiper muffler is totally shameless and is just plain rally car loud. But the HKS Legal Muffler (£528)is hardly ever seen and is the quitest of the HKS systems. Some info I had from HKS states that it produces 93db, as opposed to 97 for the Drager and over 100 for the Hiper muffler. The quality is second to none, it may be worth a look!!

Otis,
There probably isn't. I'm sure it's in the remit of all aftermarket exhaust manufacturers to build in a "sporty" exhaust note, whether it's actually necessary or not. I think that's a significant percentage of the reason why many people fit them anyway. Nito, thanks for the recommendation - i'll certainly take a closer look at that range...

Telboy,
I have a MRT 3" downpipe with a high-flow cat, MRT centre section with muffler and a Remus backbox.
This combo is quieter than the standard exhaust and helps breathing significantly.
I would say that the Remus backbox is responsible for most of the noise suppression
Thanks
Gavin

Gavin,
Ooh, now that sounds more like it. How much was that lot? Have you had it quantified as to how much more power it's producing, or does it just generally feel more responsive? Any downsides to the set-up? Is it fully MOT compatible? Thx.
Terry

Terry,
I have a 94 WRX Automatic so my choice of downpipe was very restricted due to the different clearances.
I wanted an exhaust that was more efficient but quieter/same noise as the standard one. I also didn't want to be removing it annually for the MOT. It is now quieter - and my neighbours are thankful
I have not dyno'd the car with just the backbox change but the car was much keener to rev and now reached the 7000 redline which it couldn't with the standard item.
The graphs on Paul's dyno site show a difference

Any difference in power Stratman? Thx for additional suggestion. Have you compared it to a Remus backbox that Gavin recommends?
