Hi...
Resetting the ECU restores factory settings. So if for example the ECU had to retard the map (e.g. due to poor fuel), resetting the ECU will restore settings and allow it to re-learn parameters.
A much better and far more detailed description of this can be seen in the SIDC faq, chapter 2.4.1.1 at

Did mine a few days ago - MY00 UK Turbo. Made a difference - now boosts earlier and for longer.
Joined the wires and loads of electrical stuff activated when ignition turned on. Apparently going through a diagnostic process. Then drove gently for a few miles. Check Engine lights flashes once every half sec which apparently indicates diagnostic complete and ECU memory map wiped.
Stop, turn engine off, undo connectors, go like stink...
I believe the process resets the memory in the ECU so is has no knowledge of anything which may have caused it to retard ignition or lower boost (e.g. bad petrol) to avoid engine damage. Of course if you reset it with a tank of bad petrol it will probably just retard again straight away. I think you get best results if you do it with a tank full of SUL.

You can reset it as many times as you like. But bear in mind, if the ECU didn't have to retard the map between resets, resetting again won't make any difference.
