Sounds gearboxy, synchromesh to me. I'm not a mechanic though. I would be straight to the dealer. Nip it in the bud before it can get worse. You have the warranty!

Denz

Mine had a problem jumping out of 2nd and 3rd - not much fun going from 4 wheel drive to no wheel drive when cornering quickly!
I'll check what the problem was when i pick it up later (after having 3rd, 4th and 5th gearsets replaced at the mo). From memory it was something like a worn pinion shaft??

I've got the same problem with my MY00 STi after 12000 miles. It's going to ScoobySport tomrrow for a gearbox rebuild. Seems to be a design flaw in the MY00 gearbox but I won't know the details of what's broken until they strip it apart.

Doesn't seem to have spread to any other gear yet thank goodness.

My MY 00 needed a new gearbox after 4000 reasonably slow miles.Replaced under warranty as it was graunching between 4th and 5th and an oil change did not help. There was apparently more than just a synchro hub problem.

I had been experiencing jumping out of 5th gear problems in my MY98 STi V when easing off the throttle mostly on motorways. This happened to me 4 or 5 times then the gearbox has gave up the ghost completely. Stuck in reverse now. Called David Hendry cars who were unpleasantly gloomy (like talking to Marvin the paranoid android).

They said it sounds like the 5th gear synchro problem, that the warranty company would be able to tell that the car had been used after the problem had occurred (it hasn't) and that it would cost me £3,500 for a gearbox rebuild.

I'm going to give Park Lane a try, at least they've for a friendly voice at the end of the phone.

Guys
Jumping out of 5th can (repeat CAN) be an indication that the big nut is coming off the end of the main shaft. get it checked out, if the nut comes off the box goes BANG
Cheers

It seems that some nimrod in the factory isn't doing the nut up.

Seeing too many of these for a coincidence

It's the start of a robot uprising!

Having a nut drop off causes pain where it hurts most...

A short investigation at home turned up a nut found on our driveway a few months ago - suspect it could be the offending item, although it's quite small and looks awfully clean to have come from an engine bay...

Gizmo,

I have a `99 unmodified turbo which I got from new. I had a slight grating when changing from 4th. to 5th. gear from new until 3-4,000 miles. At 10,000 miles it started to fall out of 5th. when easing off the throttle, although it would never happen when I was trying to make it happen. I took it to Adams in Aylesbury, who service the car. Their mechanic took it for a roadtest with me, and he made it happen straight away by changing in to top gear at about 25 mph. and letting the throttle off. When he again tried to pull away we were in neutral. He suspected it was the 5th. synchro and booked it in for the next week. His prognosis was correct and it was repaired it in less than a day under warranty. He also said that it was the 4th. identical case that they had dealt with in less than a month.
