Question

I have just fitted a Scooby Sport down pipe to MY94WRX (thanks Denis) it has an aftermarket Back box, which I think is a HKS (there was a post a while back where some one posted a pic of said back box and asked what it was – well it was one of them if that helps).

What I want to know is what are the pros and cons of fitting an aftermarket filter. Would it be best to go for the panel filter as sold by Scooby Sport or a mushroom type ie HKS.

I’m not after more power and I know a lot has been said about this subject, what I’m after is a bit better pick up. Also will having a free flowing filter & exhaust give better MPG or just lean the car of till goes bang? I hope it’s not the latter.

Cheers

Yee

PS about the back box if anyone knows what the hell I’m talking about feel free to enlighten me

My experience is that if you replace a standard but good condition filter with a replacement panel filter, you will most likely feel no difference in power and when I did it, I also recorded no change in fuel consumption.

Also from my experience of other peoples cars with induction kits, they seem to run a bit lumpily at low revs and road speeds - maybe due to charge temerature. However this quicky disappears when the revs and speed increase. Whether or not you would be happy with this would depend on your priorities.

I have a Pipercross Induction Kit fitted to my MY99. Looks good, sounds grrrrrrrrrrrrreat.
Changed the B/box @ the same time. Car transformed - better pick up pulls clean & hard to the red line in each and every gear.
I recon i am getting about 2mpg more per gallon at low speeds and 3(ish) at 70+
equate to about another 30 miles per tankful of Petrol - i do aboput 30K per year best £ 80.00 i ever spent (excludes a trip to Tialiand)

Fitting a panel filter and removing the resonator on a my99 gave me 10% better fuel economy....and improved pick-up/response

I got about 20mpg per full tank after fitting a cone filter to a MY98, this cannot be sneezed at and the sound is glorious.

Cheers
