Andy,check under the intercooler to see if the spring that attaches to the clutch release fork and small bracket on the block is disconnected/missing this is the usual cause of your problem.

your such a guru steve, how do you do it, you should do this for a living you know. I am in awe of your mechanical ability. (is that enough grovelling for a free tune up ? )
As for that pete croney bloke, pah he can't even remember to send you some free bulbs he promised after you drive to essex from Brighton to find he forgot to check whether he had any
<only joking pete>

thanks for the tips, i should have said i know absolutley nothing about mechanical problems(put petrol in and turn the key is about it for me)so i rely on others! the guy i bought the car from thought it was the master cylinder so changed that,thats not worked- so he said i might need a new clutch,
what i dont understand is changing up below 6000 revs every thing seems normal(i mentioned about the spring but was assured its ok)i dont want to pay for a new clutch if thats not the problem--any one any more ideas? is it a common problem? or am i just giving it to much stick?
andy!

My clutch has similar characteristics - soemtimes it stays down and I have to flick it back up with my foot - as it sticks!
I have a 'spare' cerematalic AP clutch that I carry around in case the standard sti5 clutch goes on me!
