I am considering fitting an adjustable bleed value to complement my new boost gauge. What benefits / downsides should I consider. Car is a MY99 and is currently holding 13 - 13.5psi. What gains could I expect and will this alter the drivabilty of the car? Adjuster will be inside the car so I can turn up/down boost to suit the conditions.

thanks simon

Simon, if your lucky like Lee C. then the car will not go BANG!!!!

Bleed valves are the cheap way to blow your engine. Don't do it.

If you want to up the boost, go for a new ecu. Prodrive, Link, Motec, Unichip, etc. etc.

Subaru dealers know what faults to expect from a blown engine, they also know what you been playing with.

Hope you have an understanding dealership.

Fitted bleed valve to UK94.
Piston went bang.
Engine rebuilt minus bleed valve.
Mind I was being silly in competition at the time with 23PSI

A bleed valve of a few quid cost hard earned sheckles in rebuild.

DONT DO IT......

Now fitted with Apexi fuel and Boost controller units (Isn't this a fancy bleed valve thou' ...)

Simon, i fitted a bleed vavle to my 95 wrx about 6 months ago and it works fine , the key is to only up the boost by 2 psi max, and it should be fine .

As somebody else has said, only up the boost by a small amount, do not push it anywhere near the limit of the engine and there shouldnt be a problem.

Its all well and good saying to go and get an electronic boost controller but with things like the Apexi AVC-R retailing at £450 plus fitting and setup then the bleed valve can be a viable alternative. Just make sure you use a reliable boost guage, one with peak hold would probably be best.

A peak hold ~ so that your dealer can have a look what it blew a piston at !
