Problems with 1st gear - MY00
#1
Help....
I am having trouble with engaging the 1st gear on my Impreza MY00 turbo....
Unless I am at a complete standstill the gear is not engaging into 1st smoothly...
I have just crossed 7,000km...
I also recently changed my gearbox oil to Mobil synthetic oil...Not sure what grade...
I am experiencing serious grating engaging the 1st gear...
Any ADVICE???
Thanks

Do I seem to remember from a few weeks ago you have also been indulging in a bit of drag racing with this car.....???
Gearbox reliability/longeivity seems to be a bit marginal on some MY00 cars (speaking from experience - one of our two MY00 cars has had gearbox problems).

Change in g/box oil has been know to cause problems like this. Suggest you get the right grade Silkolene (for example) or go back to standard, and the moral of the story is......
"If it aint broke, dont try to fix it"
and
"Do as Sunil says and NOT as Sunil DOES!"

What problems have you experienced?
I have been doing some 1/4 mile times and 0-60 mph times
I guess that I shouldn't?
The gearbox seems to be a weak link...
Any sugestions?
Thanks for the advice
SunilP....I will try and get the Silkolene....
has anyone changed their gear box??

Gearbox prob in archives ("MY00 won't go into 3rd gear"), too long to reproduce here!
Not done it again since - YET!
Hard standing starts particularly with dropped clutch on dry tarmac will shorten the gearbox/clutch life - about 100 fold!
My advice - treat your gearbox like you treat your woman.....

I didn't realise Silkolene made gearboxes - live and learn M8!!

I have a similar problem (only realy a problem in cold weather though), MY00 4k, sitting on the drive first is fine, however as soon as the car is moving it becomes a battle to engage first gear until the car warms up, then it engages fine. My car has the standard gearbox oil, and has not had any drag experince. I have just put it down as a trait and will get it checked when it is in for its 7,500 mile service next month.

Robertio,
I would be interested to know what they say at the 7,500km check....
I used to experience the problem of engaging 1st when the car was cold, however, as of late it has been happening if I am slowing down and I try to engage the 1st gear...
Once the gearbox is warm, from a standstill the gear engages well however, if slowing down and not at a standstill it grates going in???
I have not done that much drag racing...The car is 4 months old with 7100km...
Do you have a problem trying to engage 1st when slowing down?
Cheers

No problems engaging first when slowing down, except when cold to get over those ridiculous speed bumps. Once it is warmed up it is fine, even changing into first at 20 or so.
Will keep you updated, I'm going up north for my 3 1/2 week Christmas hols, when the car is getting its service, so may not be able to post result until mid Jan.

I've had problem engaging 1st gear, I just let the clutch up a bit and it slots in.
More concerning is the morning clutch judder and probs with 4th/5th if I'm nailing it.
I don't think the std Subaru gearbox can really handle the high revs of a P1... If I take is to the red line when changing gear, it'll graunch every time... but if I change slower and let the revs drop to 5/6k it'll change no problem... It's quite a difficult one to demo to the mechanic cos you're at 120mph+ by then!!!

It shouldnt graunch though either way!
My first clutch was replaced at 11k miles due to a warranty oil leak repair exposing a badly manufactured flywheel with several high spots. Unfortunately, the replacement clutch has already started juddering when cold and "clunking" when slowing down and trying to engage first after only a further 1.5k miles!
