Unhappy

Got a problem with my '94 WRX, which started quite suddenly last week.
It's loss of power under heavy acceleration at 4 to 5,000 rpm. It's sometimes quite harsh and jerky, but sometimes the engine just goes flat and acceleration drops right off.
At low revs, it's fine, and under light acceleration it will rev right up to the redline with no problem.
There was no 'check engine' light, but I connected the black connectors under the dash, and then it blinked a code 31, which I think is throttle position sensor failure. I reset the ECU, but the fault code remains, together with the loss in power.
Is there anyone who's experienced this fault, and did it cause the same symptoms?
Assuming the sensor has failed, is it possible to take it off myself and give it a clean (I assume it's a potentiometer of some kind), or would I be upsetting some calibration setting.
If it can't be fixed, anyone know how much they cost to replace?
