How many miles out of a standard clutch ???

My MY98 did 62,000 (hard) miles in 18 months on the standard clutch. The dealer only changed it when doing some other work (it was a company car so I didn't have to pay :-). When I spoke to them they said anything from 10,000 to 100,000 depending on how you drive. Quick get aways in the dry are typical scoobie clutch ********.

How many miles should I get from a standard clutch on my MY98, the car currently has 48000 on it with a new engine going in for piston slap. Also does anyone recommend a clutch to use that will not affect the warranty and what should I be looking to pay for it? The reason I need to know is that Subaru charge £800 for a standard clutch including labour and £500 for the parts to do it when they replace the engine.

£500 pounds for parts ??? I think you should check your prices there I have just priced a genuine clutch mysef, plate £88, Bearing, 71, and the cover was £91 not inc the vat that was from the subabru dealer but he has put me onto another make 'blue point' they are made to O.E spec, supply'd by brown brothers these are new clutch's not recon's he says he has fitted them a few times and seem to be very good and has had no complaints also they are a lot cheaper <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:<HR>Originally posted by Darren Thompson:

Like was said in the prvious post I'd check that price with the dealer again as mine did a complete clutch change on my 95 car for £450 inc parts labour and vat although he did say they had an offer on and this price was at a 10% discount.
The original clutch was 5 years old and had 46500 miles when it went.

Thanks folks I have spoken to the dealer and a **** up in prices were quoted thanks to the new guy in parts not having a clue. The price I have now been quoted is £180 to change while the engine is out so that is just parts and to have the job done as the full hit with labour £480.

I have a 2000 MY U.K car. Circa 5,000 miles in, had problems with judder when cold, hill starts. Diagnosed at 7,500 service needing "New Clutch". Warranty of course.
Is this a record? Hope that it make you feel o.k. at 48,000 miles!

Hi I've not got a turbo only a humble sport.
(wife,kids,mortgate etc.) It's MY96 I've just had the clutch replaced at 76K at a cost of £371.(That's plate,cover and bearing) I can't imagine that the turbo clutch would be that much more expensive and the labour will be the same.Anyway I'm a bit pissed off as I've never had to replace a clutch in any car in nearly Thirty years of driving some cars with over 100K on the clock!!.

My clutch plate was replaced at 45k miles while the engine was being replaced due to piston slap - only charged £98 TOTAL inc. labour for OEM plate. Didn't have to pay labour for 45k cam belt change either as done at the same time.

Does this mean I drive like a wuss, it certainly doesn't feel like I do . My car (a Uk '95 turbo) is coming up to 100k on its original clutch, but it is now in the last throws of life and the 'traffic light take offs' are not really possible anymore. I was thinking of going down the AP/Helix route but I don't think its worth the extra cash on a high miler like mine .
I think I'd better go get a fiesta diesel or something wussy like that.......

Getting the clutch fitted today and now I need a fly wheel as well so the whole job just for parts is £550. Subaru know there is a problem with the fly wheel but wont do a recall so us lot end up paying. The fly wheel problem is the reaon for the cluch judder so I have been told and if I dont change the fly wheel they cant put and warranty on the new clutch, nice one. The only saving grace is the car has goneinfor the piston slap so a new short motor is being fitted which means the clutch is being fitted without labour charges which would be £300 with the VAT.

I must hold the record on this one. 3 clutches before 10,000 miles on my last car!
My first one lasted 7500 miles. Now i think this was a faulty clutch as the plate snapped. Warrenty looked after it.
The car was then used by me as a demo car for Mac's Power Motorsport and we did a 310 bhp conversion. Clutch only lasted 2,000 miles but this is because the standard clutch is only good for 270 bhp on a UK car. My third Clutch only lasted a day!!! The car was trying to break the 0-60 irish record and the standing quarter wearing slicks and on super grippy surface. it was not quite gone at the end of the day but I replaced it with a racing clutch anyway.
A week later Scum stole my car and I never got it back! :-(
I suppose under normal circumstances 30,000 would be normal wear and tear?
