It's only me!
Am I correct in think that a 94 WRX has 2 CATS, 1 smaller one in the centre section?
If this is the case. Is is of any benefit performance-wise to remove it? Can it still pass emissions test with just the main CAT??
Any help appreciated.
Nick.

Nick,
Friend of mine has a MY93 WRX and his had 2 CATS. If you do have 2 CATS then yes removing the middle one will give you a performance benefit. It should still pass an emissions test depending on the state of your main CAT.
Removing and refitting a centre section is a half hour job so you could always refit the centre CAT for the MOT.

Speaking with previously aquired info from this bbs the only imprezas with 2 cats are the EU types.
Jap imports IMO do not have a centre cat. Mine hasn't, I own a MY95WRX

I'm getting more confused about this all the time. I've got a standard MY98 WRX and have been told by a mechanic there is a cat in the centre section. I said I thought it might be a silencer but was told that you could tell the difference and it was definitely a cat. Someone must know for sure about Japanese Imprezas and their cats?

Assuming WRXs only have the one cat, why not just move it?
the reason it's in the downpipe is to get a fast 'cat light-off' - i.e. get it nice and hot as soon as possible after startup.
If the downpipe is so critical, why not stick a decat downpipe on, and move the cat somewhere in the centre section - possibly where the resonator is.
OK, it'll still be more restrictive than no cat at all, but if the downpipe is really that critical it'll give performance advantage.
Alternatively, fit the decat downpipe, fit a cat replacement tube in the middle of the centre section somewhere, then come MoT time,it'll be dead easy to refit the cat, but it'll be in the centre section not the downpipe.
Any thoughts?

Agree with NDT, but I'd prefer no cats at all (who wouldn't )
Do imports need cats at all to get through the MOT? I hear that if a particular model isn't in the emmissions database
the test defaults to the pre-cats test. WRX's (pre 01) get this test I think. Most testers may put the car in as a UK turbo but technically they should'nt.
Anyone know for sure?
How I would love to know the actual facts as I desperately want to decat the d/p.

would be cool if we can just run import cars with SVAs through the non-cat test....probably too good to be true though :-(
as for the other cats, if another one craps on my garden, the airgun'll be coming out of retirement....
