Question

Any ideas guys?
I have a turbo 96 and the thing drink's petrol like it's going out of fashion! I could under stand this if I was sitting on boost all the time, but this is not the case! I filled it up on monday, and its only done 136 miles to half a tank! I have taken it to a dealer and got them to put it on the diagnostic machine, and they came back to said the throttle body was contaminated, so they took it appart and cleaned it. Since it has come back it's been alot quicker, but it still ticks over at 1000-900 rpm and drinks fuel much the same b4 it went in. Now is this normal with these car's or am I being a little paranoid??

I fill up at around 280 on a tank, usually takes around 45 litres which or about 24-25mpg.

I would normally consider 150+ on half a tank good, anything less than 120 bad and anything in between normal.

Hope this helps

Used to get 200 miles to a tank, filling about 55 litres eachtime.

Regardless of how I drove.

Back up to 280ish with a little ecu tinkering.

Does a 2.2 drink much more than a 2 litre?

I have a UK MY96 with only a 'RamAir Induction Kit' mod, average about 240 miles to a full tank of 95 RON Unleaded.

This will be a mix of mostly city traffic driving and occassional country lane whooping !

Hope this helps m8

I reckon a full tank at motorway speeds would see me 330 miles. City traffic would be less as you have more stop start driving. With my Cav GSI, I saw about 10mpg less in city driving than on the motorway.

And 'Spirited' driving see's the tank empty v'quickly. Use alot of 2nd and 3rd, you can almost watch the gauge drop.

My tick over is also about 900rpm. I run on Super.

Cool

.......and the main reason we bought scoobs was???? not fuel economy was it..... my UK 97 Wagon runs 97 RON, ticks over at 800rpm.....returns 220 max off a full tank and some times as low as 180 and thats the way I like it

Cool

**** This is a slightly technical answer ****

Could this be a lambda sensor failure? I suspect that it might be a failed sensor... MAF and lambda spring to mind.

I am assuming you have had better figures before... I suspect 280ish out of a tank isn't really bad for a scooby... it's certainly better than I tend to get.

***** Normal service resumed ****

My 96UK does 200-220 miles on 45 litres 97RON with octane booster added.

Before I started with the octane booster I was getting about 180 to the same amount of fuel.

Although I do drive like Satan when he's pi**ed off

T5NYW (Tony Walls) gets about 120 miles per tank, too...!!

He had a total MAF failure at Oulton Park, and we were hoping when it was fiixed that it would make a dramatic improvement. (Thinking it must have been deteriorating gradually...). No such luck, it's as bad as ever.

Me? I can get between 250-300 miles on a tank of 95Ron. (Not hanging about, either! )

Where does the fuel go ?? Normally straight into your brakes. It not so bad to to quick accelerations, but if you then convert your speed into heat, by using the brakes, fuel consumption go up.
If you want to have fun, you have to pay

Recon on an average of £ 24mpg - 28mpg on motorway only type stuff at a steady 80-85 - seems to do less at 70 MPH

My fuel guage is a one!
i get 175 miles in the first half of the tank and 75 on the second half according to the guage ho ho!

£15 of super unleaded a week gets me about 65miles!! but thats just short(but very quick)trips around town. i think that works out at 16 miles to the gallon, seen about 9 racing around county roads, anyone beat that? oh its a 97my uk.

cheers,

on last fill-up I managed 12.4 km/l (mpg?? can someone tell me what's the metric equivalent of british gallon?). With about 47 litres of 98RON SUL i covered 585 kms of mixed country roads (1/5) and steady 65-mph motorway (4/5) driving, sedately on both, plus a few 3 kms uphill blasts. Yeah, i hear you people calling me pussyfoot out there, but sometimes i do get this wicked sense of achievement getting this kind of mileage out of the Scoob. Looking at the digits on my calculator it feels like having-the-pie-and-eat-it-too, if you know what i mean.

The car is a MY00 with induction plus equal-length manifold and 3-inch decat exhaust, and a set of lightened pulleys.

Robert
