depends when it was last serviced!?

only done 1500 miles in mine since last service (7.5K in total) but oil was blackish when drained

if its black at least you know its collecting all the crap and not leaving it inside your engine!

1-2K miles after a service my oil is dark honey coloured, and very dark after 4-5K. It's just soot etc, no need to worry, as the other post says, just shows the oil's doing its job.

If its not black, its not doing its job.

It should suspend the carbon particles, not let them drop out to form sludge.

The filter holes are approx 20 times bigger than the carbon particles and if you ever cut an old filter open, you will (should) find it to be clean inside. The filter is there to stop lumps of metal, not to remove carbon.

This suspended carbon does no harm at all to the engine and is approx 1/10th the thickness of a bearing oil film thickness.
