Grear change problem
#1
Guys
Recently, I been having a notchy grinding feeling when up-shifting from 4th to 5th. But this only happens at RPMs above 5000 or hard driving.
When cruising, I don't get this problem. It feels like electric shock from the gear stick. However, once in gear, the car drives well.
Please advise what I should do to rectify this. My gearbox oil was just changed but the problem did not go away.
Thanks
Douglas

Take it back to your dealer . It's nothing to do with your oil - it's usually a poor assembly of the gearbox there is apparently one nut that needs tightening and the problem goes away. Happens to a lot of P1's for instance but sorted instantly at service - no return of the problem

Mine does exactly the same and if anything seems a little worse after changing to full-synthetic gear oil! I am going to replace the oil with Castrol Syntrax soon as the word is that full synthetic oil may be too "slippery" for the synchromesh when it is being worked hard (a bit simplistic, but sounds half reasonable) I also find 5th a bit baulky to engage compared to the other ratios? There have been similar threads to this in the past- re-weak synchro.

I had a notchy 2nd-3rd change until changing gearbox oil to Castrol syntrax....it's a lot better but not completely gone.Apparently 3rd gear has a different design/cut (according to Subaru techno gezzer) which can cause slight notchiness at the end of the change..this is what I was experiencing...notchiness thro the gearstick at the end of the change....decided not to whip out the box before trying oil change...dealers gave varied responses..such as ..it's a characteristic sir!!!!
Car is MY 99 20k miles...fault there since I've had the car at 6.5k
Just as well to note that there is a common fault with 5th gear....sounds like yours...it gets progressively worse until it won't stay in gear/pops out of gear/stops working altogether....Apparently due to a nut working loose on the end of the shaft carrying 5th...the looser...the worse the symptoms...

My Ver 5 Type R is now 18 mths old. Up until last month, I never experienced problems with upshifting from 4 to 5 when driving hard.
I have all along been using Mobil 1 75-90. When I got the norchy shift problem, I tried switing to LSD oil. But the problem was no solved.
I suspect it's a worn out LSD but I all along been driving with much mechanical symphathy for my gearbox by matching revs.
On thing I can add is that I currently overcome the problem by doing double de-cluth from 4 to 5 only. Downshifting is not an issue. Normal upshift during cruise from 4 to 5 is also not a problem.
Any ideas?
