lo troops
just a few queries want some more power from the car and thought that a down pipe and mid section would do,have been told to expect about 20-30 bhp from this.have already put on a magnex 6*4 oval.
1.want more power.
2.dont want to bugger up mot.
3.is there system that allows the cat out for normal driving then replace it for the mot.
cheers dougie+diana

the reason that the cat is in the downpipe is for fast "light-off" - i.e. getting the cat up to working temp as quickly as poss after starting.
various threads have claimed that a standard UK car with only the centre cat will pass MoT when hot.
So might be reasonable to assume that the STi or P1 downpipe cat would get you through MoT if you moved it back into the centre section.
Apart from the fact that it would be much quicker and easier (therefore cheaper) to fit/remove before MoT, if you wanted to run with no cat the rest of the time.

Doug,
as far as I remember GGR do a down pipe with a less restrictive CAT it is more expensive though, that would be the only option I think, It would be touch and go to pass with just the centre section.

what about moving the cat from the downpipe into the centre section?
my STi only has the one cat anyway (downpipe)
if I moved this into the centre, would I still get results from the new downpipe?

NDT,
I was thinking exactly the same thing. But the P1 has just one CAT in the downpipe (which has a higher precious mmetal content --> for emissions) and therefore I think that it'd be a touch and go for emissions on a normal scoob.......Maybe the PE centre pipe has a more effective catalyst to help with emissions......??? Plus, if the gains of just a centre pipe CAT were so effective, I would have thought Prodrive would have done it.....???

dougies549,
Mate took the car for it's test. So don't know where it went. It was right at the maximum permited levels on the test. Close thing. I guess it was tested as a catted car.
DP has made a huge difference. I'm using 4th instead of 3rd now for overtakes. 50-70 in second only takes a couple of secs.
3rd, 4th and 5th all breathe better and go to the red line far more easily. 2nd positvely slams in to the rev limiter. Very easy to red line in second now.
5th at 70 really moves. Slight lag from the turbo is easy to catch you out. Over take a couple of cars and its too easy to be into 3 figures in 5th. Still catches me out.
Not had it RR'd at all, so I couldn't guess power figures.
And then there's the noise.

Dougie,
I took Sith's car for its MOT,only used this place once before and they passed a UK car for me which was running a Link and SS dpipe and HKS Hiper system.Talking to them on Monday they said that of the car has cats fitted it has to have a cat test if not it has normal emmision tests. Its been a long time since I used to be a MOT tester and I cant remember the rules.Tempted to phone the ministry and find out for certain but I don't want to push my luck or the testing stations come to that.
So my feeling is to keep quiet and go with the flow.I have previously tested cars with only a centre cat and find if they are hot enough they usually go through.Plus there are a few tricks you can employ to fool the testing equipment

Im going to get a magnex DP fitted, already got the rest of the system. I'm just going to keep the original DP with cat and whack it back on at MOT time.
A little bit of hassle but fairly straight forward.

Steve - you can take my car when its due for the test in....... 16 months time
As far as 20-30bhp gains - dream on!
You get a fair bit more torque lower down but approx 10 bhp max gain with fully decatted system

Steve Lawson,
You are correct - if a car is fitted with a cat at manufacture it must be tested with a cat. i got caught out with my 92 legacy (cats only became compulsory a year or two later), had to cut out the mid section of my non-cat mongoose system after MOT failure and add a 3" aftermarket cat (£260 fitted). But I got the garage to make it swappable so I just keep the cat for MOT's. Passed 3 MOT's so far with no probs.

can you give me more details about the aftermarket cat that you used - am considering using a cat-free downpipe then putting a cat in mid-section at MOT time -as easy to fit / remove

Nick,
The garage which MOT'd the car sourced the cat after it failed emmissions. As it happens the cars going back to the same garage (A1 motors in cardiff, tel 02920793431) for a new MOT next thursday. Either give them a ring (ask for steve) and mention my car or mail me your contact details and i'll find out next week.
