Question

x-post from iwoc, and 22b, sorry just want to get better coverage.

OK, numb-nuts™ question time.

been thinking about thinking getting a oil temp gauge, as raggin' the beast when oil is cold is not good.

This got me to thinking. I know you can get oil coolers to keep the oil cool when blasting around, but what about oil warmers to warm the oil up when you start off?

can you get them? If so where/how much.

I was thinking of this:

Oil warmer, oil cooler, oil temp gague.

Basically, start car up in morning, oil temp read from oil temp gauge (how??? from oil temp sensor, how??) realises it's below A (A being a suitable temp, any ideas what though?) then it starts up oil warmer and a warms oil to B (B being a suitable temp, any ideas what though?) then it stops warming, we go off and blast, and oil cooler does it's thing (though not cooling enough to cause oil warmer to start back up )

does this sound possible, or am I really being thick.

what advantages/disadvantages would there be to a) oil warmer, b) this setup?

I'm not sure but reading the scooby owners book MY97 uk turbo I think it said something about no load of trot go to graham goode racing website look up oil coolers and it says somthing about scooby turbo's having oil and water connected somehow to warm the oil up? to fit a temp gauge i think scoobysports or scoobymainer do a sump plug drilled out to take temp sender. Hope this helps

Markus,

I may be wrong, but I think you can get a water to oil cooler.

When the oil is cold, it helps it get upto temp as it is passing though a part of the system that is linked to the water cooling system. When the oil is hot it works the other way round. I doubt that really it makes much difference though!?

Les H, Robski,
The oil/water heat exchanger you describe is, I believe, fitted as standard equipment in all imprezas. It works exactly as you describe.

see the thread I started about engine pre-heaters - (Hotstart) a couple of days ago.

Heating the water will have the same effect

and another thing -

it's very hard to heat oil up to temperature, in a way that it's easy with water - I think mainly due to flow characteristics and a tendency to stick on the element.

Found this when testing a Bentley engine on a motored rig (i.e. engine being turned by the rig,not actually firing) a few years back - only way to get the oil hot was to sit the thing being turned over at 4000rpm for 30 mins - i.e. let the friction do the work.
