Question

I have an MY94 Impreza that was PPP'd back in 94. I suspect from the service records that the Airfilter had been replaced several times. And is likley to be a 'Halfords' item.

As the car is due it's first service since I aquired it. I therefore pose the question 'What Filter should be fitted'. i.e what would of been origionally fitted at 'Prodrive'.

Many thanks

Hi Scott,

I think Scrappy is right, but the RamAir panel filter had issues! They are oil impregnated foam filters, and they were known for destroying MAF sensors, as the oil is drawn from the filter onto the sensor. Also the shape distorted on these filters, as they did not have a strong design.

An alternative would be the ITG panel filter than ScoobySport can supply.

I though K&N were oil impregnated paper/wire construction.

As I have used these on previous cars and even still have a K&N cleaning kit which includes the Red oil that yoiu spray on after cleaning.

K+N are oil impregnated cotton supported by wire mesh. I believe that K+N have been making such filters for longer than pretty much anyone else... Certainly longer than ITG, IIRC. Also, IIRC, K+N make the filters used by most of the F1 teams.

The MAF problems were only on MY99/MY00.

I'll be getting a Ramair then.

I'm sure these were what we used to fit to our 50cc Yamaha FS1E's, to make them do 32.5mph

When I bought my MY97 UK car 2 years ago, i was advised not to use a RamAir panel filter. This was due to the blue-oily substance being left on the wrong side of the filter.

Also the filters when they were removed were distorted.

Hence the move to the ITG filter in the Scooby community, which didn't leak oil everywhere, and kept it's shape due to a wire mesh reinforcing the filter.
