What is "Quickshift" gearchange?

When i first heard of "Quickshift" i thought it was one of those "sequential gearboxes" but I now know its not. But what is it?

Quickshift is a replacement gear lever (or set of levers) which reduces the "throw" between the gears(i.e. instead of a 6" gap between 1st & 2nd, you change that to a 4" gap)

The following pic shows the 2 levers the quickshift is a GGR one, you can see that the bolt hole is slightly higher on the quickshift lever.
