Question

Hi,

Anyone chipped their Scooby? Superchips boast a 40bhp power increase for 350 quid, sounds like a win-win situation to me but before I do anything like that I'd like to know if anyone else has done it and their thoughts. It'd be done on a UK MY98 Turbo.

Cheers,
Steve.

Woops - I should have searched first I guess. Since the chipping idea generally seems to be frowned upon, what are the best performance related mods to be done first?

Steve.

Hi Steve,

I'm no expert, but I'm sure everyone will agree, it's exhaust and filter that you need to swap. Opinion varies on whose is best, depends what you are after. If I were you, I'd go uprated panel filter (e.g. ITG, K&N etc.)as yours is a later car which apparently might not behave with an induction kit and straight through exhaust with no cats (scoobysport or magnex system is v. popular). Then you can go onto boost controllers, uprated turbos, front mounted intercoolers etc. etc. there's loads to do, it's just down to personal choice.

I run a 96 uk with Blitz induction kit and Jap Innovations downpipe with HKS Hiper muffler and a bleed valve and I love it. Much quicker than standard. I used to have a Magnex system and it was very good.
You could try using octane booster to. If nothing else it improves your MPG!

Also, think about uprating your brakes to cope with the extra power cos the standard stoppers are poo. try braided hoses(big difference), 4pot front callipers and uprated pads and discs. I did this and the car now acually stops!

Hope I've helped.

Rich

Another option to quite high gains, is an electronic boost controller. As long as your sensible with it, and get your fuelling checked out.

My car with other minor mods (exhaust & filter) also a MY99 gets in the region of 280bhp on Power Engineering's rolling road.

I know Nito who has a UK MY98 was getting about the same figures with similar modifications.

A good boost controller will cost you about £400, but you retain overboost safty features.

Just thought! Also I'll be selling my HKS EVC 4 in August to make way for a Link!

Cheers for that guys,

Actually the first thing I wanted to do before doing any engine mods was uprate the brakes anyway, I'm usually fairly sensible like that New exhaust and filter was first on my list (I'd checked out both ScoobySport and Magnex recently). I'm not bothered about price of parts really, reliability and quality are more important to me. Any reputable dealers for carrying out work? One thing, not that I'm too fussed right now as I don't plan on selling the car within the next couple of years, does modifying have any effect on resaleability?

Sure is a whole new world out there ...

Cheers,
Steve.

Steve,
I`m probably doing what your thinking about doing, i`ve uprated the front brakes with the Prodrive conversion and bigger wheels (17 ``).
I`m fitting a BPM downpipe and a HKS centre section, back box and the car is booked into BR developments for a Link fit and HKS racing suction kit.

I'd say 17" wheels make a massive difference to the handling of the car. Much more confident with it.

Bump steer modification will be done next time I'm around PowerStation's way, and will report on that.

Back box, at the minimum, is mandated otherwise we'll remove your posting rights from this board

Wink

Rob,

Tops - do let me know how you get on, that'd be cool, especially as we have the same motors.

Chiark, if I don't get a new backbox then I promise to give you all my money I've listened to the MP3s on bbmsports, I almost got an erection actually. Almost.

Later,
Steve.

Steve.
An exhaust & filter were the first things I did to CK1 (also a MY98). I would definitely recommend an induction kit over a panel filter though, and they're fine on our cars (problems started with MY99's).
I have since added a second-hand Prodrive ecu which increased torque fron 225lb/ft to 266lb/ft!!
I agree that you should uprate your brakes first though, very wise.
