I am experiencing a burning smell when reversing up a small slope, could this be the clutch. Also how often do people check the oil in the rear differential?

Could be the rear brakes, or more specifically the little handbrake drums/shoes, I used to have the same problem in an old astra (drum rears), went fine forward but there was friction in reverse and a smell.

I find this common in scoobs, even a 3 point turn done quickly with a little bit of slip can make it smell( like stagment water), and on a hill its worse.

But i would'nt worry too much unless its slipping
