Question gear whine

i currently run a 60k mile 93 subaru impreza wrx.

it has been modified to approx 300bhp, with further mods unfitted as yet to
increase this to circa 340bhp.

i will be looking to go further in the future, with 400bhp in mind.

recently the gearbox has become noisy. when in gear at low speed there is a
constant clicking noise coming from the transmission. wether in gear,
clutch dipped or out of gear coasting the noise is there.

at wide open throttle, up through the gears and on fast cruise (80mph +),
4th and 5th have become very noisy. this can be described as a whining
sound. 4th is less noisy than 5th.

i am open to suggestions as to what this may be and am seeking advice
elsewhere.

my car is primarily used for (fast)road, although i have used it for 1/4
mile runs and intend to use it for trackday use in the future.

can you guys give me your opinion please?

cheers,

Weava

Could be many things, but my bet would be on gearbox bearings. I had similar issue on one of my 911 gearboxes, fresh bearings sorted it out.
Hope this may help you.

Cheers 911,
i reckon it is bearing based - gonna get a replacment box.

toying with the idea of changing to a UK box with longer gears, considering my current and future mods.

what do other think?

Question Gearbox whine

I have virtually exactly the same problem in my UK MY94. Got a mixed bag of responses from my recent posting on this topic but basically I came to the same conclusion.

Any idea of costs for a replacement box including fitting?
