IHI VF35 ..... IHI VF30

Question IHI VF35 ..... IHI VF30

Does anyone know (especially Mark (EMS) who seems to have played a lot with this turbo) if the IHI VF35 shares the same compressor cover and compressor wheel as the IHI VF30 and/or VF34.

Or let me change the question all together, while looking for a rally application turbo, will it be possible to bolt to a IHI VF34 a P15 exhaust out of a IHI VF35 while looking for the best possible spool up ? ..... ball bearing & smaller exhaust housing .

Carlos,

It should fit, I didn't test it though...

I don't think the roller bearings will give you much of an advantage. It's more like a theoretical advantage in my opinion. How is the friction in the bearing compared with the rotational mass of the compressor and turbine wheel? I don't think it will be much of a difference.

The VF35 is a good choice for a rallycar in my opinion! (TD05 can handle more boost, but is not homologated on the new age cars.....)

Thanks for your reply.
We have tested on the GDB Group N cars the VF30/34/35, and my choice will be the IHI VF35 always ..... it will spool faster than anything else homologated, and at least with the 32mm restrictor it produces the same top end as the VF30/34. When comparing the IHI VF 30 with the 34 we found a slight difference which wasn't even noticed byt the driver.
Problem is that over here we can get the IHI VF30 and VF34 at a very good price, and the IHI VF35 is not available, and if you find one it is more expensive. So I was thinking that instead of buying new VF35s I could just get a new VF30/34 and change the hot side with the P15 exhaust housing of the VF35.

Now I have also tested a stronger WG actuator ..... very very interesting results, now all that would be left to do is to actually have someone modify the stock WG so that it "looks" like sotck .

change the hot side with the P15 exhaust housing of the VF35
If you can find that, please inform me! I am waiting for an ordered exhaust housing for almost 6 month now......

I only know of uprated actuators that look different, that doesn´t help you. Does it make a big difference? Try with vacuum on the wastegate hose!

Well it has already been found that some EVOs use tricked turbos, to get better spool up. They modify them to ball bearing units, which gives them better low end .....

On the older turbos it was quite common to see combinations such as a VF22 front side and a P18 hot side, which worked really really well. I guess I will have to find if the P15 hotside works on the VF30/34 or even a VF22

The P15 housing doesn´t fit the VF23 center! (perhaps with some machining, but it´s not a direct swap)

Are u 100% positive about this ?????

I am asking because I have already replaced the P18 hotside of a IHI VF34 (damaged because of excessive use of ALS ) with a P18 that came out of a VF24, and it was a direct swap ..... which obviously meant that I could even fit a P20 to the IHI VF34 too if was looking for more top end power. This seems to agree with the following IHI turbo information:

Would be really lovely (for rally purposes) to use a VF22 with a P15 housing

Nope, PE1820 has a bigger compressor wheel that that of a VF30/34/35 .....

I am 100% sure Carlos! (I double checked it)

The inside diameter (where it slides over the center) of the P15 housing is about 7 mm bigger. So the housing is not centered.

I have also checked today that we replaced the original hotside (P18) of a IHI VF34 with a older P18 hotside that came out of a IHI VF24 and it was a simple bolt-on job, nothing had to be modified.

If you know for sure a P18 hotside from a VF24 will fit a VF23, that means a P15 hotside from a VF35 doesn´t fit a VF34..........
