Question Help on next MOD's please.

Ok I have a MY97 turbo that is producing 306bhp at the moment with the following mods:

APS TMIC
APS SR30 Turbo at 1.35 bar
APS cold air induction kit to inner wing
Unichip mapped for Optimax
Full decat Magnex Exhaust system.

I have a Hybrid FMIC on its way courtesy of Harvey and the group buy, when I get this installed what other upgrades would be beneficial at the time of installation and remap also what power/torque figures do you think I would get?

Any help would be much appreciated
Regards

Have you still got the stock injectors? I'd be curious to know the duty cycle at that sort of power. If they are still standard, you could always upgrade those, along with a new fuel pump and pressure regulator.

Don't know a great deal about turbos, so don't know if that boost level is low/medium/high for that turbo. But with the FMIC to keep the charge temp down, and bigger injectors and fuel pump/FPR keeping the fuelling happy, I'm sure the boost could go up some more before remapping...

Although, I seem to remember Rich Wild producing 386/317 at Well Lane recently using stock injectors, so maybe you don't need to replace them after all. And that was using a TMIC as well! Click here to view the thread. You might be able to get some useful info off it...

budget?

id tend to suggest:
headers
up-pipe
injectors
fuel pump
remap

i think after that point, you'll be looking at serious money and having to consider going internal or seriously reducing engine life.

have you considered improving performance in other ways (suspension etc)?

with front mount and remap you might safely push 350bhp but as said you will eventually kill something!

But have some fun sod it.

Mind you over 300bhp was once considered super car league, sounds to me that you're just greedy

not exactly true!

the old boxer engine is a lot tougher then most people think, poor tuning had given it a bad rep for internal strength.
tune it properly (without det) and the stock engine is good for well over 400bhp.

the gearbox on the other hand isn't!

if that was my car i would be looking at fitting a walbro pump and fse reg ASAP.
then some 440cc or 550cc injectors, depending on how far you want to take it.

porting the headers is also a very good cost effective mod.

not sure how good the unichip is or if you can use bigger injectors with it, if not i would go for a full stand alone ecu like the link, apexi etc to make the most of the mods you have.

price for an apexi is around £470 plus mapping so its not a lot!

also a knocklink is a must when tuning any subaru just to be on the safe side.

hope this helps

it IS true that it will reduce engine life.

my post wasn't questioning how strong the engine is (you're totally right in what you're saying regarding strength.. people have proven it)... i'm merely stating that ANY level of tune over standard WILL adversely affect engine life. that's the case on any engine. more strain = less life.

i would rather have an engine with, say, 300bhp that has been mapped to that spec than a standard one with the original map that has been designed to cover a full production run.

in my opinion the first would be a more reliable setup, but i understand what you are saying if it were a like for like setup.

oh, don't get me wrong - i too would rather have a well mapped engine with 300+ bhp that will last circa 100k miles than a stock one with circa 250 that will last 120k miles (example figures). the point is, the more you tune, the more you will reduce engine life... it's just up to you whether you're prepared to take a trade-off. i certainly am to some extent.

but i honestly don't think you can up power AND map more "reliably" for the engine at the same time. if this were possible, subaru would do it with their stock map.

Subaru do not custom map each car because it is not cost effective to do so, if they did their cars would be a lot more costly therefore less competitive in the market place

.... But would have better engine life at the same power if they did IMHO

Cyber Scoob:You need protection first and to understand what the instruments are telling you. Knock Link from BRD or Jap Innovations and some form of AFR. The AFR does not need to cost a lot, eg £50 from Scoobymania. Autometer.
There is a group buy on 341 Walbro, 255lph pumps and FSE fuel pressure regulators. Look on the Hybrid Group Buy thread or contact Alyn at AS Performance. 0191 410 3770. or info@asperformance.com.

Is your exhaust a full 3" including D/P?

Your car is presumably mapped for the APS C.A.K. but to go much beyond that you are looking at bigger injectors, an alternative induction set up and mappable ECU like Apexi which still uses the MAF or Link which deletes the MAF and can retain the APS CAK a bit longer.
