Unhappy Syncro going in 4th ????

Going to work this morning I thought I might plant the right foot a little. Changed from third to fourth and grrrrrrrriiiiiiiind, tried a couple of times as I thought I may be a bit light on the clutch but no. This doesn't happen when going from 5th to 4th, is this the syncro mesh failing on me. It does happen at low speeds or low rev.

Also, what are the consequences of driving in this condition and what are the costs for getting it put right.

Oh, it's an MY99.

Cheers

A mate has the same problem, first 5th gear grinded, then 4th, it's gone in 3 times so far to be repaired, so hopefully it'll be ok this time.
Though his car is an 03 WRX, so the work is being done under waranty.

Couple of pointers:

Just make sure your carpet mat hasn't gone under the clutch pedal

A clutch fault would show up on weaker gears, do you have any problems getting 1st or reverse? Look for a slight clunk or very slight change in revs when you engage 1st or reverse when stationary. If you notice anything then there is a possibilty that your clutch is not dis-engaging properly.

If the clutch is fine, then it is likely a syncro fault. You will find if you match the engine revs to what they will be doing in the next gear, you may find the grinding will be far less. Try double clutching (letting clutch in neutral before puting back in to get into the next gear). If that helps then the finger does point to the syncro.

Obviously, when your crunching gears you are doing damage. So in the long run it's better to put it right. But in the mean time, if you adapt your driving using the above mentioned methods to avoid cruching then it will do less harm.

Costs to fix depend on if you want the gearbox repaired (cheaper) or reconditioned.

Drain the gearbox oil and see if theres any metal fillings or blockers on the magnet, just repaired a simaler problem on mine, but it was fifth that woundn't engage, turned out to be the blockers between 4-5 gear had dislocated and came out with the oil when i changed it, if you find any then you will need to split the box and put them back.

My 4th syncro ring is gone. Trying to determine whether to do 6 speed or not. But double clutching gets around it.

Same as you. £500+ to sort or get a recon box.

Right, just had a long run in the scoob, bloody gears crunching again.

Now, I have just had a TSL full decat fitted and suddenly get the problem, has it got anything to do with the heat shield??

Also, what oil do people recommend for the gearbox.

Help me please

Cheers

change the oil for castrol syntrax...could be the best £40 you'll ever spend.
It certianly cured my MY94 a year or so ago.

As mentioned above it'' hopefully feel like a new box.

Bah

Will try the oil, looked at mine this morning but seems alright.

Just had a decat from TSL so foned them up to see if it may be a heatshield problem (claspin at straws now)

Problem really looks like the syncro, so by by £700+

Cheers for the help and will post if the oil change works.
