Default new member with a stack of questions!

hi i've just brought a 1994 wrx 5door wagon 58000 miles on the clock

what is the standard turbo?

will a induction kit knacker the maff sensor on my motor?

should i be using octane boosters with optimax?

what is the loudest system available to me? (and do saloon exhausts fit wagons?)

also are the rear light clusters the same on wagons as they are on the saloons?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I believe the turbo on the wagons of that age is a Mitsubishi TD04

Maybe. Even if it doesn't directly damage the airflow meter, it could make it misread, which is just as bad for your engine. The standard induction tract is not restrictive and you have very little to gain from fitting an induction kit. Thus, you're better off leaving well alone and fitting a good aftermarket panel filter.

Yes. Your car is a Japanese market import that is intended to use 100 octane fuel. You should use Optimax plus octane booster until/unless you fit a KnockLink, or have the car remapped to run properly on UK fuel (or have information to suggest that this job has already been done).

There are plenty of people selling "loud" exhausts. I'm not sure anyone's done a test to find out which makes the most noise. Suppose the loudest system would be a straight through pipe with no silencing, but you can't legally use anything like that on UK roads.

There's no difference between sedan and wagon exhausts.

also are the rear light clusters the same on wagons as they are on the saloons?
No, they're slightly different.

And no, you don't want an atmospheric Dump Valve

They are gay Plus it will confuse your MAF sensor and in my experience, will not do your fuel consumption any favours.

TD04 so plenty room for more power at the cost of early spool by using a TD05. I had a similar wagon with TD04 and it was a lovely car to drive and no need for a turbo change with the right mods.260 bhp and 250 ft/lbs for very little money.
A K+N cone and ccold air arrangement properly installed is quite safe.
Yes. Plus optimax or Esso super or BP super.
Go for a 3" exhaust. Scoobymania is quite loud. If it is not loud enough you can cut holes in it. Running without a back box also makes it loud and saves weight but such behaviour is anti-social. Wagon and car are interchangeable.
Different.

cheers harvey! agree with your comment about antisocial behaviour (all good fun now where is my drill!!)

what mods would you reccommend for the 260bhp??

i assume the td04 is the preferred turbo?? (new to turbos!)

what is the most power i could reliably get from my wagon (not made of money mind!)

cheers stu!

Don't need a drill, just a saw and a piece of 3" steel pipe from your local metal stockholders.

There's a few different ways you can get to the 260bhp area. Cheapest/safest would probably be a ScoobyECU.

The TD04 is the standard turbo on the post-'96 UK cars and is the smallest you'll find under an Impreza's bonnet. It's the best choice for power outputs under 280bhp or so as its small size means light weight, low inertia, and hence good spool and throttle response characteristics.

If you want more go than that, you'll start to look at the larger alternatives, like the TD05 Harvey mentioned, one of the IHI VF units, or indeed one of the increasing number of hybrids that are about.

boo! i've got the tiny turbo what sort of money to the td05 & alternatives cost and what modifications will be required to fit them surely its not just a case of bolt and go is it??

No reason to be ing, there's no point having a turbo that's bigger than you need. Like I said, if under 280bhp is the target, the TD04 is the best you can have.

Assuming your turbo has a 90 degree inlet, the most obvious replacement would be a TD05. You're right, it's not simply a case of bolt and go. If you wanted to take advantage of the bigger turbo's flow capacity, you'd need additional supporting modifications, such as an uprated fuel pump, bigger injectors, and either a remap or a manual boost controller. Better intercooler wouldn't be a bad idea either.

For 260bhp you can stay with the TD04. Good 3" exhaust and down pipe, good induction system which you can do yourself plus a K+N parallel or cone with cold air box arrangement and some form of ECU tweak and boost lift. Could be Super Chip, Unichip or Scoobyecu from Paul Blamire or David Wallis.
