Considering changing ECU to Z4 Type from 7D. Worth it?
Hello All
I am running a MY93 WRX with following mods
HKS Air intake system
HKS 3" exhuast system, with full decat etc
Dawes Device 1.1bar
HKS FMIC
HKS SSQV Dump Valve
HKS FCD Unit
HKS Boost Gauge
Uprated Fuel pump (new) Warbro
VF34 Turbo - Brand New
Uni-Chip recently mapped at Powerstation
At the moment I have a 7D ECU in this car, and have been offered a Z4 ECU which I know is of the 260 BHP 94-96 WRX model.
I was wondering what the EXACT difference between ECU's ?
Does the Z4 just increase boost a little or has it got better maps etc etc Better Spool up?
Considering I have a Uni-chip installed, running 280 BHP with 240Lb torque at 1.1 bar, would I have to have this remapped if I fitted the Z4 ecu.
I have to make a decision on this ECU pretty quick so please post any helpful info soonio
?? Does anyone know if a 7D ECU is the origional fitted to a MY93 WRX, if not what is it from?
Cheers

Not worth it as you have the unichip in there and it will screw up your map on there.
Junk the unichip otherwise and get a custom map on your existing ECU from Pavlo.

This way I could fit the Z4 ECU and get it mapped later.

I may still consider the Scooby ECU/pavlo route in future, hence thinking about getting the Z4 ECU for now.
What I want to know is what is fundamental difference between my 7d and Z4 ECu, is it just more boost to get the 260PS or is it more aggressive maps?
If more aggressive/better maps, I would consider doing this and getting uni-chip mapped. I.E does the Z4 provide better fueling down low, better spooling etc etc
I know the Uni-chip reads MAP sensor and piggybacks Crank angle sensor (timing) and MAF sensor (fueling). So would there be any benifit from having a Z4 and Uni-Chip map, compared to 7D with uni-chip map?
Cheers all

The Z4 ecu has a much better map to it than the 240bhp one, think scott said ,it was they same map used in the prodrive map, had 1 on mine now for about 6 month, and its much better

Yeh No 7D on there, When I brought this car and inquired on here, Somebody seemed to think it was of a 96 UK spec car the 7D ECU....
Anyone on here can confirm this for me?
Pavlo, Bob anyone????

Z4 will have a better map then the UK 7D
It runs 12.7psi as opposed to 11.47psi and has a slighty better fuel/timing maps (but much bettert then an early WRX map)
As mentioned above it was the Z4 map in the Pre96 Prodrive ECU with a few minor tweaks (Prodrive ran 13.64psi)
You may find general round town driving is alot better with the Z4 map.
Fuel cut is about 15.8psi IIRC
You may be able to 1.1BAR with a Z4 and a fuel-cut defender. But please don't try without a Knocklink

I am currently running 1.1 bar pressure with FMIC using Dawes. I have a HKS fuel cut defender which is set at 1.4 bar. I have no knocklink yet but that is next on my list. What I was thinking was to fit the Z4 with Uni-chip allready and then get it RR and mapped accordingly (obviously checking for knock at same time).
My thinking was this, knowing that the Z4 has a much better map than the 7D I was going to bridge out Uni-chip connections so it is disabled, fit the Z4 and see how car runs. Then Take it to be RR and mapped with Uni-chip enabled.
I know the Uni-chip does alter timing/fueling by offsetting sensor readings.
My thinking again was would it be better to have a Uni-chip tuned Z4 rather than a uni-chip tuned 7D......
Let me know if I am wrong or right here!!!
Cheers

if it is mapped well, the percentage of adjustment is good enough and the points along the Rpm scale are sufficent then the same results could be achieved using either the Z4 or the 7D.
However, as the Z4 is better fuel/timed then this would obviously be a better starting point
