Default Engine revs on upshift?

Wonder if anyone can help on this as its driving me mad!

Basically whenever pulling away, while shifting up a gear im finding that it takes ages for the engine revs to fall down to the point where they match the road speed ready to engage the clutch again. I'm not talking about taking it round to the red line here, 3.5k is enough to necesitate waiting ages (~1-2s).

Not a problem when I want to drive around sedately (so not very often!), and trying to get past anything at the lights is near impossible without some very uncomfortable (and no doubt clutch destroying) gear changes!

Would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this as i feel its kind of defeating the point of owning a scoob - i found driving my sisters 1.1 fiesta the other day more enjoyable!

Oh, this is on a 98 Sport btw.

Cheers...

Manners, the 01 onwards cars are meant to rev slightly between gear changes. They all do that sir.

could be a sticking idle air control valve . ususally on the top of the manifold, right hand side. they sometimes are a bit sticky and may be causing this. or you might have an air leak in the intake somewhere.
if you take the IACV off - make sure you mark its position, otherwise the idle will be naffed!

Thanks for that steve, kinda makes sense, i'll try to have a look over the weekend, although not being particularly mechanically minded sounds like it might be best left well alone!

Any other thoughts anyone? Could it possibly be as innocent as the trottle pedal sticking slightly or something?

Cheers

My MY03 WRX also does this, and is very frustrating. I have a mate who works for Vauxhall, and he says most newer cars do this, and is related to emissions. It still annoys me though, and I haven't taken it back to the dealers, and will ask them at 10k service unless it develops any further.

My MY03 is the same and it sounds like a growling noise coming from the engine or gearbox while changing up.
As said when driving sedately no problems and its around 3.5k revs.
