Unhappy Should I have fitted this???? (AP Clutch)

Still have a problem with my AP Organic!
According to the AP web site, they supply a thrust bearing (CP 6150-18) for the cluch on request. I used my perfectly sound Stiv3 thrust when I replaced the stock Sti unit for the AP. Could this be why the clutch pedal still comes back halfway?
Taking the box out after this weekend's race (hill climb) so trying to understand just what I have done is wrong!
Help!

Why me? AP clutch, Sti thrust, RA gearbox/diff = losts of hard hard work!
Changed the clutch release arm spring to one off drum brake shoe return spring, all to no avail. I've cocked this up!(somewhere)
Not impressed.
Racing today and Monday, and the gears can crunch on fast changes hill climbing.
Resigned to removing the RA box/clutch, re fitting my Sti cover plate over the AP driven plate, new thrust brg, and putting my Sti box/diff back in, and get back to where I was last season!
I'm a full 3 seconds off my personal best time which is cr*p.
Just cannot see how I've gone wrong here, so thought that the thrust might be the culprit.
To make things worst, I'm now convinced that the car is the worlds first 2 WD Stiv3!
Not at all sure if the rear wheels are getting any drive now!
Front tyres are warm and the rears stone cold after a frantic hill climb. Not normal.

Could be on for a 1st in class tomorrow, so wish me luck!

See my reply to this in your other thread WORLDS FIRST 2 WHEEL DRIVE STI.

DONT take your gearbox out because it's more than likely not caused by the clutch assembly. I agree with Andy F on this one.

Colin.

Colin/Andy, thanks for the input.
Really pi**ed off now with the RA box 'demon tweek' for racing. Strikes me it is no advantage over the Sti unit!
don't the 1996 on boxes have double synchros and the early trans just one?

I will look AGAIN at this release arm spring, but I'm sure the spring I've put on is about 10 times the rate of the weak spring Subaru fit originally. That thrust bearing is really pulled into the clutch cover!

All I know is that the STi clutch/box was perfect and the RA box/AP clutch is full of trouble, somewhere, somehow, parts are wrong, I've fitted them wrong, but it is crazy!

Anyway, got a 1st in class today, and a bottle of red is on the table!

Will let you know what I find......

Congrats on the 1st in class 911.
Think Andy/Col Could be right on this.
The reason i say is. I also have an AP organic pushin over 400bhp/340ft/lbs torque(STI 5 Type R ltd )
When first fitted .Return spring came adrift causing Erm.. No return
Replaced it with a stronger spring from work and ended up with the same symptom you have.
Got standard spring refitted and all good.(Think theyre about 80p).

BTW clutch centre ripped out a couple of weeks ago.(I think due to fitting garage not fitting all bell housing bolts and causing misalignment All sorted now. But that's another story as car is now in For sale section.

Cheers Steve

Nice one !!

Perhaps the release arm is only grabbing one side of the bearing ? This can be fixed from above but is a PITA.
Is your partial release only under acceleration ?

Andy, Yes!
It all only happens under hard accelleration. On the normal, cruise, 'mode' all is well. just happens only when blasting it! ie during competition!
do you think only one side of the release arm 'fork' is in the release brg?
When I re fitted the box, (my first Scooby clutch job) I DID NOT pre assemble the thrust to the fork. I clipped the thrust to the clutch and after the box was back on I then battled to thread the fork onto the thrust, thus because I cannot see everything and the fork assembled ok, I am assuming the two lugs on the thrust are fully located.
Bloody hell, please don't say only one leg is 'on' the thrust, as it only means I need to pull the pivot shaft out and 'juggle' it all about again to ensure the two legs are located on the thrust!
Andy, what is PITA?All I know is it will be a bast*rd to do and I cannot be sure I've located it all correctly.
Graham.

Whip the box off. it wont take that long..

I personally put the pivot bar thing back in with the clutch fork and the release bearing seperate on the input shaft, then after its bolted up, push the clutch fork by hand and clip the bearing in.. iyswim..

is it the pedal sticking, or the clutch sticking?

Also bleed the clutch as said.

David, your method is the correct one. I found this out after I did mine.
Before I changed the clutch/trans all was perfect. Since the clutch went in all has been wrong.
As it is now, if you drive hard down the road in say 4th, just touch your foot on the clutch pedal, the pedal will drop to the half way mark, without you pushing it!
It recovers when you stop accellerating. It is as though the diaphram spring in the cover plate is moving during accelleration, the thrust bearing follows it, the relase arm does the same and the pedal slave cylinder the same also!
I have remover the 'helper' coil spring off the clutch pedal now so the pedal always come back to the top, BUT, while the clutch mis behaves you can gently press the pedal down half way befor the 'slack' feeling stops and you feel you are back to actuating the clutch. At this point there is only about 50% travel left to clear the clutch for the next gearchange..........crunch. Or baulking of the gearbox etc.
It all clears itself if you drive like a granny might.

I think the only solution now after flooding the Snet with my problems to to srtip it all out and investigate.

AP themselves are mystified, Roger Clark Motorsport are too, they both have been very very helpful. Tempted just to take the car to them to fix it.More £££££££££!
This is getting rediculous.
