Angry Front wheels totally locked

My car came to a sudden halt last week on the motorway. I was taking it to a garage as it sounds as if it was firing on 3 cylinders. The car suddenly had a louding screeching noise so I pulled over to the hard shoulder. Tried to fire the car up but nothing there. The garage seem to think my bottom end has seized. However when the recovery truck came he could not drag the car up as the front wheels had totally locked. The backs would turn but not the fronts, even with the clutch in. Any ideas on this??? We finally got the car up using skid plates but am i facing a new box aswell as a new engine??
